A recent survey reveals that over half (56%) of Irish people are very or extremely interested in the news, higher than the global average and reaches local news brands, according to the Digital News Report Ireland 2025.
survey found that enthusiasm for news is robust among Irish citizens, outpacing audiences in the UK (39%), the European average (45%), and the US (51%). Among the participants, traditional news outlets like Reuters, BBC, and Population Ireland held the majority of trust, while local or regional media like RTÉ and local radio also shared that position, deputy poets of the Digital News Report Ireland. This could be attributed to their reliance on a media landscape that includes a mix of traditional, local, andprogressive platforms.
In discussing the mannermost people receive their news, survey participants highlighted the dominance of traditional media, particularly local and regional platforms, in Ireland. Almost three-quarters (72%) believed those who expressed their interest in news had been served by local or regional news outlets, closely followed by RTÉ. Moreover, a smaller but still significant 20% accounted for their monthly digital consumption.
In examining the ways people obtain their news, 58% viewed it on TV before the study, with the same percentage splitting results between online media and social media and blogs. The initiatives of digital platforms like social media caused a different pattern in news consumption. Approximately 47% argued for their consumption through social media, followed by news from local and printed newspapers, podcasts, and AI chatbots.
One key factor noted is disinformation awareness. Over two-thirds of Irish people reported being concerned about fake news, a trend that might be difficult for the impressionable masses to develop critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, traditional media attributed this concern to phenomena specific to the Irish citizen, such as their unique connection to radio and newspapers, which remain key components of Irish media landscape.
In conclusion, Ireland’s media landscape remains a focal point of global attention, despite changing consumption habits. The survey underscores the enduring trust in local media, particularly local radio and newspapers, while also highlighting the growing influence of digital platforms. The findings even mirror the US’s similar trends, suggesting consistent interest in news across media formats.
