Occupiers in Kherson region impose fake “Novorossiya” history on children – Center for Countering Disinformation

The “Knowledge. Heroes” Project: Rewriting History and Shaping Futures in Occupied Kherson

Imagine a school classroom, but instead of learning about the rich and complex history of their own country, children are being taught a fabricated narrative, designed to erase their identity and loyalty. This is precisely what’s happening in the temporarily occupied Kherson region of Ukraine, under the guise of an educational project called “Knowledge. Heroes.” The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council has exposed this insidious program, revealing how Russian occupiers are systematically imposing a falsified version of history on young, impressionable minds. This isn’t just about rewriting textbooks; it’s a deliberate and chilling attempt to rewire the cultural and historical understanding of an entire generation, ultimately aiming to solidify Russia’s annexation and dismantle Ukrainian identity from its very roots. The children are being told a story of “Novorossiya,” a historical phantom fabricated to legitimize Russian claims, and subtly urged to “stay here and build the future,” a future inextricably linked to Russian dominance.

The motivation behind this project is deeply unsettling. The occupiers aren’t merely presenting an alternative viewpoint; they are actively constructing a parallel reality. They recognize the profound power of history in shaping national consciousness and loyalty, and they are wielding it as a weapon. By creating new textbooks that omit inconvenient truths and invent convenient narratives, they seek to sever the historical ties of these children to Ukraine. The goal is clear: to cultivate a generation unacquainted with the real history of their homeland, a generation that readily accepts Russian propaganda as fact and views the occupation not as a violation, but as a normal and rightful state of affairs. This isn’t just about controlling information; it’s about controlling minds, ensuring that the next generation grows up believing in a narrative that justifies Russia’s actions and erodes any sense of independent Ukrainian identity.

This manipulation of history is not an isolated incident; it’s a critical component of a broader strategy. The CCD states unequivocally that “the falsification of history is an instrument of genocide aimed at destroying the Ukrainian nation.” This powerful statement underscores the severity of the situation. Genocide isn’t always about immediate physical extermination; it can also be a slow, methodical process of cultural and historical erasure. By stripping away a people’s true history, by replacing it with a fabricated one that serves the aggressor’s agenda, you effectively dismantle their collective memory, their sense of belonging, and their ability to resist. It’s an attempt to create a void, to leave a new generation with no foundation to stand on other than the one provided by the occupiers – a foundation built on deceit.

The insidious nature of this project extends beyond the classroom. It’s about reshaping the entire societal fabric. Consider the analogy of a tree: if you poison its roots, it will eventually wither and die. Similarly, by poisoning the historical understanding of a nation’s youth, you weaken its cultural and national roots. The “Knowledge. Heroes” project, with its seemingly innocuous title, is in reality a sophisticated psychological operation. It frames the occupiers not as invaders, but as saviors or enlighteners, bringing “truth” to a people who, according to their manufactured narrative, were previously misled. This narrative creates an internal conflict within the children, pushing them to question what they might have heard from their families or what remnants of Ukrainian culture still exist around them.

The implications of this historical revisionism are far-reaching. Imagine a child growing up believing that their country never truly existed, that it was always part of a larger empire, and that the current “liberation” brings prosperity and stability. This manufactured sense of belonging can effectively undermine any future attempts to restore Ukrainian sovereignty and national identity in the occupied territories. The occupiers understand that a generation indoctrinated in this way will be less likely to resist, less likely to question, and more likely to integrate seamlessly into a Russian-dominated future. It’s a long-term investment in subjugation, ensuring that the echoes of Ukrainian identity fade into the background, replaced by a carefully curated Russian echo chamber.

This chilling strategy of historical manipulation is not unique, but its current application in Ukraine highlights the critical importance of preserving historical truth, especially for vulnerable populations under occupation. The attempts to turn “Azovstal” into a “museum cluster to distort history,” as reported by the Mariupol City Council, and the assertion that “Russia saved the world from NATO” in rewritten textbooks, further amplify the systematic nature of this informational warfare. The “Knowledge. Heroes” project is thus a stark reminder of how history can be weaponized, not just for propaganda, but as a fundamental tool in the destruction of national identity and the justification of aggression. It underscores the urgent need for international attention and action to counter these efforts and ensure that the true history of Ukraine, and indeed of any nation, remains untarnished for future generations.
