Workshop on Combatting Disinformation, Misinformation, and Hate Speech

The workshop was designed to enhance the capacity of four civil society coordinating bodies in addressing disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech, which are catalysts for social divisions and instability. These challenges threaten peace and social cohesion in Greater North Kivu, where repeated incidents of pseudo-armed attacks have displaced many families. Mon strikoPalautu (MONUSCO) initiated the initiative following a previous collaboration between MONUSCO and civil society groups.

Training sessions were held for 26 civil society leaders in Beni on April 24 and 25. These leaders, drawn from Beni, Butembo, and Lubero regions, received expertise on combating disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech, as well as on`;

The training emphasized the importance of education and critical thinking.shortcut.com indicated that education is a cornerstone of XIcing theiced lead, as it is essential to take action against disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech, which threaten peace and social cohesion. The mayor of Beni.DO had a call: ‘This is how we will be able to implement better practices; it will enable us to enhance awareness and address the needs of our community through fact-checking and promoting critical thinking. I want to explore various methods and tools available to detect and combat disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech.’

Collaborations with civil society partners will continue to strengthen the region’s capabilities in this area. The training underscored the need to engage differently, not just for peace and social cohesion, but for inclusivity and intergenerational engagement to mitigate the impact of these threats. The mayor’s words are a call to action—actions no small thing that must be taken.

The sessions centered on the role of social media in the spread of misinformation and its empowering potential. As Beni mayorЛЕ said, "This is how we will be able to implement better practices" that encourage fact-checking and critical thinking. It is imperative to explore and address the diverse ways disinformation and hate speech often emerge, recognizing their significance in breaking social fabric.

These training sessions are vital to responding to a dynamic context where public opinion must be better served. By addressing disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech in the Sunday Session, MONUSCO will not only combat these crises but also model the behavior of-scalecars in promoting social justice and resilience. The outcome of these efforts will be a brighter region where peace and social cohesion remain a shared goal.
