No, Zelenskyy Did Not Purchase a Luxury Hotel – DW – 12/04/2024

Title: Disinformation Alert: Zelenskyy’s Alleged Hotel Purchase Debunked

The recent surge of social media claims alleging that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy purchased the luxury Palace des Neiges hotel in Courchevel, France for €88 million has sparked significant controversy. A viral video demonstrates a man in a blue jacket claiming that the hotel has changed ownership and is now held by a "famous person," specifically insinuating it to be Zelenskyy. This narrative has been proliferated across various platforms, attracting over 27,000 shares on X (formerly Twitter), and igniting a wave of skepticism regarding how public funds are being utilized by the Ukrainian leader amidst ongoing conflict.

However, a thorough fact-checking investigation has revealed these claims to be unfounded. According to a statement from Monte-Carlo Societe des Bains de Mer (SBM), the genuine new owners of the Palace des Neiges hotel are the SBM group, which officially acquired the property in October 2023. The company is currently undergoing renovations on the hotel, with plans to reopen to the public in December 2026. This crucial detail dismantles the narrative suggesting Zelenskyy’s involvement in the purchase and highlights the importance of verifying claims circulating on social media.

Delving into the source of the misinformation, it was found that the website displayed in the social media video was a fraudulent version of the hotel’s legitimate website. Disinformation actors manipulated the URL by appending "hotel" to the original web address, which had been registered back in 2007. In contrast, the fake site used—created to mislead users—was registered as recently as November 22, 2024. Such discrepancies emphasize the necessity for individuals to rigorously scrutinize information before accepting it as true, particularly when it relates to sensitive subjects such as international relations and wartime leadership.

The orchestrated nature of this misinformation campaign forms part of a broader Russian propaganda strategy aimed at undermining President Zelenskyy’s credibility. Experts on disinformation have pointed out that these attacks target Zelenskyy personally because he embodies the symbol of Ukrainian resilience and resistance against Russian aggression. Julia Smirnova, a specialist from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London, echoed the sentiment, noting that disinformation efforts are concentrated on eroding public support for Ukraine, thereby detracting from the unity and solidarity forged in the face of adversity.

The propagation of misleading narratives regarding Zelenskyy’s financial decisions feeds into ongoing efforts by adversary states to paint him as an extravagant leader disconnected from the struggles endured by ordinary Ukrainians. By portraying him as a purveyor of luxury goods, these narratives aim to create discontent amongst international supporters and sow distrust in Ukraine’s leadership during a critical time in the ongoing conflict.

As the world commemorates the one-year mark since Russia’s invasion, the persistence of such misinformation highlights the interwoven nature of warfare and disinformation campaigns in modern geopolitics. From securing and spreading accurate information to recognizing and combating falsehoods, the responsibility lies with both individuals and institutions to ensure that narratives shaping public opinion remain grounded in fact. This serves as a reminder that in times of crisis, discerning truth from fiction is paramount for maintaining solidarity with those affected by conflict.
