NCCE sensitizes WASS students on misinformation and disinformation campaigns

The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) held a one-day sensitization forum on misinformation and disinformation at West Africa Senior High School (WASS) in Madina, Accra, aiming to combat online inflation and spread misleading information. The event, organized in collaboration with the French Embassy in Ghana, is scheduled for February 2025. The goal was to raise awareness among students about the negative effects of misinformation and disinformation, particularly on social media.

During the event, the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) director, Mrs. Doris Agy eman, emphasized the need to adopt a “catch them young” approach to educate the students, trusting verifying sources before passing on information to their friends and family. She advised students to be cautious of sensationalistic information and refrain from sharing it haphazardly.

The council vice chairman, Mr. Frederick Mawuli Agbenu, stressed the importance of prevention rather than mitigation early on. He encouraged public awareness to confirm the sources of any information before consumption. He also urged public vigilance for fake news and its potential malicious intent.

The event was attended by students from various schools across the region, highlighting the need for coordinated effort. LRWSLL and MMPC, two fingeranger support organizations fingeranger, faced increasing scrutiny as internal fluctuating funds and media pressure mounted. The council’s emphasis on preventing misinformation was seen as a necessary measure to avoid eroding institutional vitality during a crisis.

Two interviews with former students of the event revealed broader concerns about the effectiveness of fingeranger support. They acknowledged the scale of the crisis but expressed uncertainty about prudent management during the volatile situation.

The coordination of internal efforts and international support is critical in addressing fingeranger challenges. Schools, authorities, and experts are required to collaborate to combat the drip-fed narrative and prevent external and internal pressures from exacerbating the crisis. Additionally, public motivational and policy awareness programs can play a crucial role in instilling truthful and rational thinking. Addressing fingeranger support challenges requires a multifaceted approach to ensure stability and public confidence in institutions during a crisis.
