Gambian Ministry of Information Unveils Comprehensive Strategy to Combat Disinformation and Strengthen Public Communication

The Gambian Ministry of Information has embarked on a multi-pronged initiative to tackle the pervasive issue of disinformation and enhance government communication strategies. Information Minister Dr. Lamin Ceesay outlined the ministry’s plans during a monthly press conference, emphasizing the detrimental impact of disinformation on social cohesion and the urgent need for a collaborative approach to address it. Central to this strategy is the development of non-legislative documents designed to foster a collective commitment among media practitioners, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to combat the spread of false information. These documents will serve as a framework for responsible information sharing and promote adherence to ethical standards in public discourse.

A key component of the ministry’s strategy is the establishment of a social media observatory. This inclusive body, comprising representatives from the ministry, the Department of Information Services (DOIS), social media platforms, civil society groups, and fact-checkers, will continuously monitor online content to identify and flag instances of disinformation. The observatory will act as a real-time alert system, notifying the public about potentially harmful false information circulating online. This proactive approach aims to empower citizens to critically evaluate information and make informed decisions, thereby mitigating the negative consequences of disinformation. The minister highlighted the importance of this initiative in fostering a more informed and resilient society.

Complementing these initiatives, the ministry is implementing a community-based policy focused on strengthening community radio stations. Recognizing the vital role these stations play in disseminating information at the local level, the policy aims to equip them with the resources and support necessary to effectively counter disinformation within their communities. This approach recognizes the unique reach and influence of community radio and leverages its potential to promote accurate information and foster trust among local populations. By empowering community-based media, the ministry aims to build a network of trusted information sources across the country.

Beyond addressing disinformation, the Ministry of Information is also focused on strengthening government communications policies. Dr. Ceesay acknowledged the current lack of a comprehensive framework guiding government communication, both internally and with the public. To rectify this, the ministry is developing a government communications policy to streamline and standardize communication processes. This policy will establish clear guidelines for how government entities interact with each other, disseminate information to the public, and manage the government’s brand image. By clarifying roles and responsibilities, the policy aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and consistency in government communication.

In addition to the communications policy, the ministry is working on developing regulations for the Access to Information Act, further solidifying its commitment to transparency and public access to information. These regulations will provide a practical framework for implementing the Act, ensuring that citizens can effectively exercise their right to access government information. This commitment to open government is seen as a crucial step towards fostering greater public trust and accountability. The minister emphasized that these legal instruments are necessary to build a robust and transparent information ecosystem.

The Ministry of Information underscored its dedication to the principles of transparency, accountability, and innovation in public service. Dr. Ceesay highlighted the government’s commitment to providing essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, emphasizing the collaborative nature of progress and acknowledging the vital contributions of the media and development partners in achieving national goals. He reiterated the ministry’s reliance on media support in fulfilling its mandate, recognizing the crucial role of a free and responsible press in a democratic society. The ministry’s comprehensive strategy reflects a strong commitment to creating a more informed, resilient, and cohesive Gambian society. They see this as a shared responsibility, requiring the active participation of all stakeholders to ensure its success.
