Meta will train its AI on Newsmax, a far-right outlet with a history of conspiracy theories

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence has turned into a high-stakes arms race, with tech giants scrambling to secure vast troves of data to train their models. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has recently found itself at the center of a brewing controversy regarding the sources of this data. Reports indicate that Meta has entered into a strategic content partnership with Newsmax, a far-right media outlet known for its polarizing stance and history of inaccuracies. This deal allows Meta to pull from Newsmax’s extensive archives to fuel its AI-driven query tools. While the financial details remain under wraps, the partnership marks a significant development in how information—and potentially misinformation—is fed into the systems used by nearly four billion people every day.

The core of the backlash stems from Newsmax’s track record regarding factual reporting. According to NewsGuard, an organization dedicated to tracking media credibility, Newsmax holds a staggeringly low score of 20 out of 100, largely because it repeatedly fails to adhere to the most basic standards of journalism. The network has been a prominent vessel for conspiracy theories, most notably regarding the 2020 U.S. presidential election. These falsehoods led to major lawsuits from voting technology companies like Dominion and Smartmatic, resulting in Newsmax paying out over $100 million in settlements. Furthermore, the Center for Countering Digital Hate has labeled the outlet one of the most prolific sources of climate change disinformation on the internet. By integrating this material into its AI, critics fear Meta is essentially legitimizing and amplifying sources that have historically operated outside the boundaries of truth.

From a human perspective, this isn’t just a technical partnership; it’s a decision about what kind of information we allow to shape our worldview. AI models are often perceived by the public as “neutral” or “objective,” yet they are only as good as the data they consume. If a user asks Meta’s AI a question about a sensitive historical event, climate change, or the integrity of an election, and the AI pulls from a source with a documented history of fabrication, the risk of “hallucinated” or biased information becomes a systemic problem. When these AI features are embedded directly into the apps we use to communicate with family and catch up on the news, the line between a helpful assistant and a conduit for propaganda becomes dangerously blurred.

It is worth noting that Meta is not relying on Newsmax alone. Reports suggest that the company has inked similar deals with a wide array of other publishers, including Fox News, News Corp, The Washington Examiner, and The Daily Caller. While Meta has also brought in more mainstream, traditional journalistic powerhouses like USA Today, CNN, and People Inc., the inclusion of multiple hyper-partisan outlets has raised eyebrows. Critics point out an apparent asymmetry in these deals: there appear to be no equivalent partnerships with left-leaning media organizations. Meta has remained largely silent on why this imbalance exists, leaving many to wonder if the company is prioritizing certain narratives or simply failing to maintain a balanced data diet for its AI.

This strategy reveals a broader, concerning trend in the tech industry: the prioritization of data volume over data quality. In the race to make AI tools more conversational and “human-like,” tech companies seem to be indiscriminately vacuuming up the internet’s content, regardless of its accuracy. When corporations prioritize the sheer scale of their training data, they inadvertently turn their AI products into amplifiers of the very disinformation they often claim to combat in their social media feeds. This creates a cognitive dissonance within the user experience, where a platform might flag a post as misinformation while simultaneously using that same source to train its intelligent assistants.

Ultimately, Meta’s push to keep pace with competitors like Google and OpenAI carries a profound responsibility that goes beyond quarterly earnings or technological dominance. By shaping the information ecosystem that billions of people rely on, Meta is effectively acting as an arbiter of truth, whether it intends to or not. If these AI tools are allowed to synthesize, repackage, and present biased or false information as factual answers, the consequences for public discourse will be severe. As AI becomes more deeply woven into the fabric of our daily lives, users deserve transparency about where this information comes from and a commitment from tech leaders to prioritize rigorous, reliable journalism over the vast, unfiltered, and often inaccurate archives of the partisan web.
