Kiko Pangilinan hits disinformation on juvenile justice law: Lies do not make families safer

In the wake of the tragic and heartbreaking school shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, where three students needlessly lost their lives, a secondary crisis has begun to spread online: the rapid proliferation of disinformation. Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has issued a stern warning to the public, cautioning that the confusion surrounding the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act is not merely a digital nuisance but a dangerous distortion of reality. As false narratives take hold of social media, the focus shifts away from the grieving families and the genuine systemic reforms needed to prevent such violence, and instead toward political maneuvering. By weaponizing the law to serve divisive agendas, these misinformation campaigns do nothing to protect our children; rather, they deepen the national wound and obscure the truth at a time when clarity and empathy are needed most.

The core of this disinformation involves the widespread, incorrect claim that the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act—a law designed to provide a framework for handling minors in conflict with the law—will automatically grant freedom or immunity to the teenagers responsible for the Tacloban tragedy. Senator Pangilinan views these claims as a direct assault on the integrity of our legal processes. He emphasizes that spreading such falsehoods is a profound disservice to the victims and their kin. Rather than fostering a productive conversation about school safety or mental health, these lies turn communal grief into a political instrument, distracting the public from the actual mechanics of justice and the arduous, necessary work required to hold perpetrators accountable under the law.

When we allow ourselves to be swayed by reactionary and unverified content, we fundamentally undermine the institutions tasked with maintaining order and justice. Senator Pangilinan’s frustration is rooted in the fact that these lies cast a shadow over the dedicated professionals—including teachers, social workers, police officers, and court officials—who work tirelessly to navigate the complexities of juvenile justice. When we falsely allege that the law is a “get out of jail free” card, we ignore the reality that these professionals are often working to balance the protection of victims’ rights with the specialized handling that the law requires for minors. This misinformation creates a volatile environment where the public loses faith in the legal system, effectively allowing those in power to evade scrutiny by hiding behind a wall of manufactured confusion.

Furthermore, the social consequences of this misinformation are devastating, particularly for the impoverished and marginalized. By painting all children, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds, as “criminals beyond hope,” these online campaigns stigmatize an entire generation. This fear-based rhetoric does not inform parents; it paralyzes them. It encourages a culture of prejudice that makes it harder to provide actual support to at-risk youth and makes the path toward rehabilitation increasingly difficult to navigate. When society stops seeing young people as individuals in need of guidance and starts viewing them solely as threats, we abandon the very principles of prevention and restorative justice that are essential for long-term social safety.

Senator Pangilinan’s counsel to the public is both simple and urgent: exercise restraint and diligence. In an era where a sensationalized, edited video or an inflammatory post can travel faster than the truth, every Filipino has a responsibility to be a guardian of facts. He urges citizens to pause—to take those few critical seconds to step back, resist the urge to react impulsively, and cross-reference information with credible, legitimate sources. By refusing to spread unverified claims, we take a stand against the normalization of lies. Integrity, in this context, is not just a personal virtue; it is a civic duty that prevents the erosion of our collective trust and ensures that we remain a society capable of addressing the real issues effectively.

Ultimately, the goal of these disinformation campaigns is to keep the public divided and misinformed, which serves only those who benefit from chaos. By clinging to the truth, we deny these orchestrators their power. We owe it to the victims in Tacloban, their families, and the future of our nation to rise above the noise. True security is not found in reactive anger or the simplistic demonization of complex laws; it is found in informed, compassionate, and evidence-based action. As we move forward, we must demand accountability—both from our leaders and from ourselves—ensuring that the tragedy in Tacloban leads to a rigorous national conversation rather than a deepening of the partisan divide that serves no one.
