“It was hard to see what was happening and do nothing.” How a student from Iași became involved in the fight against disinformation ⋆ Universul.net

At sixteen, while most teenagers are occupied with the trivialities of social media, Rareș Oancea, a high schooler from Iași, Romania, was witnessing something that troubled him deeply. During the 2024 presidential election cycle, he watched as a wave of blatant disinformation swept through his community’s online feeds. He saw real people—neighbors, family members, and friends—sharing wild conspiracy theories and extremist rhetoric without a second thought. Instead of being outraged by fabrications involving international figures or historical revisionism, many users embraced these falsehoods as gospel. Realizing that the democratic process was being undermined by a lack of critical thinking, Rareș decided he couldn’t just sit on the sidelines; he chose to use his programming skills to build a digital shield for his country.

The genesis of his project, an AI-powered platform called “Truth Seeker,” lies in a mix of historical curiosity and technical initiative. Rareș, an avid student of history who has frequently participated in academic Olympiads, was acutely aware of the dangers behind the resurgence of long-discredited ideologies. He noticed that the disinformation wasn’t just coming from automated bot networks, but from genuine human accounts lacking the tools to discern fact from fiction. Driven by a desire to defend the truth, he spent months researching the mechanisms of hybrid warfare and the technical architectures required to expose falsehoods. Despite being only fourteen when the idea took root, he channeled his frustration into a structured, proactive solution that would eventually evolve into a sophisticated analytical tool.

By mid-2025, Truth Seeker had reached a functional stage, serving as a beacon of objective analysis in an increasingly polluted digital space. The platform works by cross-referencing inflammatory content—whether text, photo, or video—against a database of verified, trusted sources. Unlike simple text-based AI models which might struggle with context, Rareș’s platform performs deep, multi-layered checks. For instance, it uses reverse image searching to verify the authenticity of visual media and cross-references audio clips to ensure they haven’t been manipulated to distort the truth. In one successful trial, the platform debunked a malicious video that falsely accused soldiers of aggression, proving instead that they were acting with empathy and care.

However, Rareș is the first to admit that his project is still a work in progress. He views the platform as a foundational tool that needs more robust support to achieve its full potential. Currently, he faces hurdles in gaining access to premium research databases—data access that is often restricted to established academic or investigative organizations. He is actively seeking partnerships with entities like “Snoops,” believing these collaborations would provide the necessary infrastructure to scale his platform from a student project into a powerful, public-facing resource. His immediate goal is to finalize a mobile application and browser extension, ensuring that individuals can get real-time fact-checking support while browsing the chaotic landscape of the internet.

Beyond the technical side, Rareș offers a stark analysis of why his nation remains so vulnerable to manipulation: a pervasive deficit in both formal education and civic literacy. He argues that both schools and households are failing to teach children how government works, the limits of political power, or the fundamental habit of questioning what they read. He recalls an incident where even educators criticized his work, proving to him that the resistance to critical thinking is deeply ingrained. For Rareș, the problem isn’t just about the technology used by bad actors; it is about the “uneducated” consumer who has never been equipped to perform a simple search, understand a politician’s actual constitutional duties, or distinguish between a populist fantasy and legislative reality.

Looking toward the future, Rareș remains humble yet determined. Balancing his studies with his passion for activism, he is uncertain whether a traditional path in politics is the best way to mend the social fabric of his country. He recognizes that change often happens faster from the outside—through advocacy, better education, and tools that empower citizens—rather than through the rigid halls of government. As society increasingly grapples with the fallout of digital polarization, the progress of “Immune Romania” and projects like Truth Seeker represent a vital shift: a generational awakening where the youth are no longer just passive consumers of misinformation, but active, tech-savvy curators of the truth.
