Hot Type: The Next Phase In the Assault on Truth

Standing before the International Criminal Court in The Hague, I was struck by the solemnity of an institution dedicated to the singular pursuit of justice for humanity’s most grievous crimes. Walking through its halls, I encountered a world grounded in the pursuit of truth, where the harrowing stories of victims and the prosecution of perpetrators of genocide serve as a lighthouse for justice. That experience, marked by the inscription, “Toward a More Just World,” served as a poignant reminder of the dignity we owe to those who have suffered. Yet, as I left that space of accountability, I realized that the very foundation of this “just world”—our shared understanding of reality—is currently under a pervasive, industrialized siege.

This assault goes far beyond crude disinformation; it is a methodical, strategic poisoning of the digital wells that power our collective knowledge. While conducting research on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, I discovered that Wikipedia—the internet’s primary source of record—is being systematically manipulated to soften the horrors of Soviet prison camps and cast doubt on the work of those who documented them. This is not mere historical revisionism; it is part of a coordinated, transnational campaign to erode the reliability of information. By exploiting the collaborative architecture of platforms like Wikipedia and infecting AI models with Kremlin-aligned narratives, malicious actors are effectively rewriting the story of history to sanitize authoritarianism.

The scope of this interference is immense and alarmingly sophisticated. Recent reports, such as those from the Atlantic Council and the French agency VIGINUM, underscore the existence of massive networks of “sock puppets” and fake portals designed to polarize Western discourse and launder pro-Russian propaganda. These actors are not just spreading lies; they are weaponizing our digital infrastructure to ensure that when people seek the truth—whether about the invasion of Ukraine or past atrocities—they instead encounter manufactured narratives that erode our trust in facts. We have spent years treating the internet as a peripheral space, failing to realize that this “information warfare” is, in fact, the central battlefield of our time.

The impacts of this manipulation are deeply personal, stripping filmmakers and researchers of their agency over their own work. I spoke with filmmaker Jen Senko, whose documentary, The Brainwashing of My Dad, chronicles the dangerous radicalization caused by outrage-farming media and the triumphant story of her mother pulling her father back to reality. Recently, she found her own Wikipedia page vandalized, with the film’s message twisted and her mother’s heroic actions erased from the record of the film. For Senko, this wasn’t just digital graffiti; it was a targeted erasure of a profound personal truth, highlighting how easily bad actors can rewrite the narratives that define our lives.

We must recognize that this is no longer a question of digital etiquette; it is a matter of transnational organized crime. By allowing foreign powers to manipulate our shared reality, we are effectively surrendering the mechanisms of democracy to those who wish to dismantle it. From the corruption of AI training sets to the “Pravda-like” mirror-mirrors of reality found in partisan media outlets, the architecture of our civilization is being subverted. If we continue to let these regimes dictate our public discourse, we lose the ability to distinguish between a war crime and a “military operation,” or between a hero and a villain.

Ultimately, the cause of protecting truth is, as the International Criminal Court suggests, “the cause of all humanity.” We cannot claim to seek a just world without securing the integrity of the information that builds that justice. It is time to treat the maintenance of truth as a vital security interest, implementing safeguards that protect historical records and creative works from coordinated, state-sponsored vandalism. We are at a crossroads where we must decide if the internet will be a warehouse of human knowledge or a weapon used to bury it. Protecting our shared reality is the most significant challenge of our generation; now is the time to stand up for it.
