oped万多Platforms and Proactive Content Handling

The Communications and Digital Ministry is set to convene a group of major social media platforms to address their responsibilities in managing “provocative” content within the context of a heated protest over government corruption and excessive salaries for outgoing lawmakers at the Senayan legislative complex in Central Jakarta. At the heart of this unspoken agreement is the need to foster a safer and more equitable digital environment for all communities.

The meeting will focus on two primary themes: ensuring a “safe digital environment” amidst the rise of “buzzers” who propagate provocative content and AI-generated messages bearing misleading details. Among the platformsinvited is the Chinese video-sharing app TikTok and the US tech giant Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. The platforms will have to implement automated systems capable of swiftly identifying and removing accounts operated by false representatives, promptly taking down any such approvals after a thorough check of account origins.

The term “buzzers” refers to influencers, both paid and unmediated, who take center stage in social media exchanges and social mediazoo. TheMode will admit this, stating, “Buzzer is a local term for influencers, who can be either paid or unpaid.” The discussions will also delve into the importance of creating “a safe digital environment” amid the exodus of social media platforms, commonly known as the “virtual crowdedness” they offer, and the associated risks of disruption.
