MEPs Condemn Russia’s Disinformation Campaign Amidst Ukraine War
STRASBOURG – Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have vehemently denounced Russia’s systematic deployment of disinformation as a key weapon in its ongoing war against Ukraine. In a strongly worded resolution adopted on Tuesday, MEPs condemned the Kremlin’s manipulation of information, emphasizing its role in fueling the conflict and undermining European unity. The resolution further called for strengthened countermeasures to combat the pervasive spread of pro-Kremlin narratives and protect the democratic integrity of the European Union.
The resolution highlighted the Kremlin’s long-standing history of disinformation campaigns, including its efforts to manipulate public opinion during the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. MEPs expressed grave concern over the escalation of these tactics since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, noting the intensification of propaganda and the spread of false narratives aimed at justifying the war and demonizing Ukraine and its allies.
The resolution specifically criticized Russia’s use of state-controlled media outlets, such as RT and Sputnik, to disseminate propaganda and disinformation. MEPs pointed to the Kremlin’s suppression of independent media within Russia, its relentless targeting of journalists and human rights defenders, and its systematic efforts to control the information landscape within and beyond its borders. The resolution further condemned the weaponization of social media platforms to spread disinformation, sow discord, and manipulate public discourse.
MEPs also expressed deep alarm over the spillover effects of Russian disinformation within the EU, highlighting its potential to destabilize democratic societies, erode public trust in institutions, and fuel social divisions. They warned of the increasing sophistication of disinformation tactics, including the use of deepfakes, fabricated news articles, and targeted disinformation campaigns tailored to specific audiences. The resolution underscored the urgent need to strengthen media literacy, promote critical thinking, and empower citizens to identify and resist disinformation.
The resolution urged the European Commission and member states to bolster their efforts to counter Russian disinformation, including through increased funding for independent media, support for fact-checking initiatives, and enhanced cooperation with international partners. MEPs called for the strengthening of existing regulatory frameworks to address the spread of disinformation online, including the Digital Services Act and the Code of Practice on Disinformation. They also emphasized the importance of promoting media pluralism, protecting journalistic freedom, and ensuring the independence and sustainability of public service media.
The European Parliament’s condemnation of Russia’s disinformation campaign reflects growing international concern over the Kremlin’s tactics and their impact on the global information landscape. MEPs renewed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for continued international pressure on Russia to end its aggression and comply with international law. The resolution serves as a powerful reminder of the vital importance of defending democratic values, protecting freedom of expression, and countering the insidious threat of disinformation in an increasingly interconnected world. This resolution follows several previous resolutions by the Parliament condemning Russian aggression and disinformation, echoing the EU’s commitment to support Ukraine and counter the Kremlin’s malign influence.
