European Parliament Condemns Russia’s Historical Revisionism in Justification of Ukraine War

STRASBOURG – In a resounding condemnation of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on Thursday denouncing the Kremlin’s systematic manipulation of historical narratives to legitimize its illegal invasion. The resolution, passed with an overwhelming majority, explicitly rejects Russia’s attempts to distort historical facts and undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national identity. MEPs accuse the Russian regime of weaponizing history, fabricating narratives that portray Ukraine as an artificial construct lacking genuine statehood and falsely claiming a historical right to Ukrainian territories. The parliament underscores that these historical distortions are not merely academic debates but serve as a dangerous pretext for military aggression, fueling the ongoing conflict and causing immense human suffering. This manipulative tactic is seen as part of a broader disinformation campaign orchestrated by the Kremlin to destabilize Ukraine, sow discord among its allies, and erode international support for Kyiv.

The resolution meticulously dissects several key historical falsifications propagated by the Russian regime. It refutes the claim that Ukraine has historically been an integral part of Russia, highlighting Ukraine’s distinct cultural heritage, language, and centuries-long struggle for independence. The parliament emphasizes Ukraine’s historical ties to Europe, tracing its roots back to the medieval Kyivan Rus’ and its subsequent interactions with European powers. MEPs also challenge the Kremlin’s narrative that the current Ukrainian government is a Nazi regime, stressing that Ukraine, like many other European nations, suffered immensely under Nazi occupation during World War II and that the contemporary Ukrainian government is a democratically elected body representing the will of its people. Furthermore, the resolution debunks the notion that Russia’s intervention in Ukraine is a "liberation" effort, emphasizing that Russia’s actions constitute an illegal and unprovoked invasion violating international law and causing widespread destruction, displacement, and loss of life.

The European Parliament’s resolution goes beyond mere condemnation of Russia’s historical revisionism. It calls for concrete actions to counter the spread of disinformation and promote accurate historical accounts. MEPs urge the European Union and its member states to increase funding for independent media outlets, fact-checking organizations, and historical research initiatives that can effectively challenge Russian propaganda and provide objective information about Ukraine’s history and culture. The resolution also stresses the importance of educational programs and public awareness campaigns to equip citizens with the critical thinking skills necessary to discern misinformation and disinformation. Moreover, the parliament calls on social media platforms and online platforms to take greater responsibility for combating the spread of fake news and propaganda related to the war in Ukraine.

The resolution also expresses unwavering support for Ukraine’s struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. MEPs reiterate their commitment to providing continued political, economic, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and reaffirm the importance of maintaining sanctions against Russia until it fully respects international law and withdraws its forces from Ukrainian territory. The parliament calls for increased military aid to Ukraine, including advanced weaponry and training, to enable it to effectively defend itself against Russian aggression. It also urges the international community to hold Russia accountable for war crimes and human rights abuses committed during the conflict and to support ongoing investigations by the International Criminal Court.

Furthermore, the European Parliament emphasizes the need for a comprehensive and long-term strategy to address the underlying causes of the conflict and build a lasting peace in the region. This includes strengthening European security architecture, promoting dialogue and cooperation between Ukraine and its neighbors, and supporting Ukraine’s integration into European structures. The resolution stresses the importance of promoting democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights in Ukraine and other countries in the region as a crucial element for regional stability. MEPs also call for increased investment in economic development and social programs in Ukraine to address the root causes of instability and foster sustainable peace.

The European Parliament’s resolution serves as a powerful statement of solidarity with Ukraine and a clear rejection of Russia’s attempts to rewrite history to justify its aggression. By condemning Russia’s historical revisionism and calling for concrete actions to combat disinformation, the parliament reaffirms its commitment to defending democratic values, upholding international law, and supporting Ukraine’s right to self-determination. The resolution also sends a strong message to the Kremlin that its attempts to manipulate history and distort reality will not be tolerated by the international community. The European Parliament’s unwavering support for Ukraine and its commitment to holding Russia accountable represent a crucial step towards achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.
