Disinformation? You’re Drowning In It!

1. The Uneasy Feeling You’ve Been Having Is Real

Lately, a strange thought has been circulating among people who otherwise consider themselves reasonable: the current administration seems to be moving with frantic, almost reckless speed, as if bracing for something enormous. The impression is that they are trying to push through as much damage as possible before the floor gives way. Many people confess this feeling with embarrassment, as though it sounds too conspiratorial to say out loud. But here’s the truth: that instinct is not paranoia. It is accurate observation. The thing they are rushing toward, and the thing they are also actively accelerating, is climate collapse. This is not happening in a vacuum. Every executive order, every cruel policy, every manufactured crisis at the border, every attack on reproductive rights, every piece of anti-trans legislation, every attempt to erode science and silence truth—it all fits into a larger plan. The far right, both in the United States and around the world, has been anticipating a climate-disrupted future for years. They are not just preparing for it; they are deliberately speeding it up. Their goal is to exploit the chaos, to weaponize disaster, to use hunger, displacement, and fear as tools to consolidate power and resources. They believe that if the world is burning, they can be the ones who decide who gets water, who gets food, who gets safety, and who gets left behind. Understanding this is not doom-mongering. It is the first step toward clarity, and clarity is the first step toward resistance.

2. The Border Is the Front Line of a Climate War

The obsession with the U.S.-Mexico border is not really about national security. It is about climate disinformation. For years, Americans have been sold a story that the border is being overrun by criminals and invaders, that immigrants are the cause of economic strain and cultural decay. But what is actually happening is far simpler and far more terrifying: the earth is becoming uninhabitable. Sea levels have already risen six to eight inches compared to a century ago, and dramatic swings are becoming routine. Wildfires are consuming entire communities. Rivers are swelling and receding unpredictably. Glaciers are melting. Weather patterns are breaking down, and with them, the basic conditions that allow people to grow food, find water, and build stable lives. All of this is creating a new class of displaced people: climate refugees. They have been coming for decades, and they will keep coming, not because they are opportunistic, but because they are desperate. The people in power know this. They know that these aren’t faceless invaders—they are human beings fleeing the very catastrophe that fossil fuel companies and complacent governments ignored for decades. But rather than acknowledge the truth, they use fearmongering to turn public anxiety against those who are suffering most. The border is a stage, and the story being performed there is designed to keep people confused, divided, and looking in the wrong direction while the real crisis barrels toward all of us.

3. When Disaster Becomes a Political Opportunity

The reason this feels so sinister is that it is. Disasters have always been opportunities for the wealthy and the powerful, but the contemporary far right has elevated disaster capitalism into a kind of ghastly art. They know that climate change will bring more than just bad weather. It will bring economic instability, food shortages, water scarcity, mass migration, and the collapse of public trust in institutions that fail to protect communities. Their response is not to prevent any of this, but to ensure that they are the ones holding the keys when it all comes apart. They deliberately dismantle social safety nets, weaken environmental regulations, gut public education, and defund the institutions that could help people adapt. They do this while wielding disinformation as a weapon, flooding the information landscape with lies so that ordinary people cannot agree on basic facts. The goal is not to convince everyone of the same lie; the goal is to make people so exhausted and confused that they stop trying to figure out what is real. Then, when the floods come, when the power grids fail, when the fires rage, they will be in a position to say, “We are the only ones who can protect you,” while funneling resources to themselves and their allies. This is the deeper purpose behind the constant lies about overpopulation. The myth that there are simply too many people on earth, and that we are consuming too much because too many of us exist, is deliberately misleading. The real problem is never scarcity; it is hoarding. It is the refusal of a wealthy elite to share, their insistence on endless growth, and their willingness to let millions suffer so that a handful can continue to profit.

4. The War on Bodies Is the War on Climate Truth

This is where the assault on reproductive rights, gender identity, and bodily autonomy comes into focus. If the far right wants to control the future, they must control who gets to exist. The obsession with women’s bodies, with birth control, with abortion, with the very definition of womanhood, is not just cultural backlash. It is population control dressed up in religious language. It is a way of deciding who is allowed to reproduce and who is not. The same logic lies beneath the vicious attacks on trans and nonbinary people. Trans people are targeted because they refuse to fit into the rigid categories that authoritarian systems depend on. They disrupt the simple story, the neat little boxes, the idea that people can be managed and sorted and controlled. The fixation on children’s genitals, on school bathrooms, on sports teams, is deeply revealing. Fascism and sexual predation share a core impulse: the desire for total control over another human being. When you see powerful men sneering at women, mocking trans people, and stripping away the rights of the vulnerable, you are not seeing a moral panic. You are seeing the same impulse that drives them to destroy the earth—a belief that some lives matter more than others, and that the world belongs to the strongest and the cruelest. Climate change itself makes all of this worse. Studies show that environmental disasters increase gender-based violence, human trafficking, and child marriage. Instability breeds exploitation. The people pushing these policies know exactly what they are doing, and they are counting on the rest of us to be too exhausted, too distracted, and too divided to stop them.

5. We Have Been Warned, and We Have Not Listened

Every year now brings another “unprecedented” disaster. Record-breaking heat waves, hundred-year floods that happen every few months, hurricanes that intensify overnight, El Niño events that shake the entire planet. The evidence has been piling up for decades, and those in charge have consistently chosen to look the other way. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was an early glimpse of what climate collapse would look like in the richest country in the world: thousands abandoned, neighborhoods left to drown, Black and poor communities treated as expendable, and the government responding with incompetence while corporations swooped in to profit from the ruins. Since then, the pattern has only become more obvious. When the recent wildfires destroyed entire towns, when winter storms froze Texas, when floods swamped cities, the response was never about building resilience or protecting people. It was about scoring political points, deflecting blame, and ensuring that the wealthy could go on living their lives intact. The people gathering at the border, the people dying in the desert, the families torn apart, are not anomalies. They are the first waves of a future that is already here. The sad truth is that many Americans have not internalized how much the world has already changed, and how much more it will change in the coming years. The sea levels are rising. The air is hotter. The forests are drier. The storms are stronger. None of this is going to be reversed by pretending it isn’t happening. And none of it is going to be survived by the same leaders who have so thoroughly failed us.

6. The Only Way Forward Is Together

It sounds bleak, and it would be, if we were truly alone. But we are not. The same systems that are trying to fracture us are also revealing their weakness: they cannot function without our cooperation. The far right fears us far more than we fear them, because the one thing they cannot control is genuine human connection. The future is not going to be saved by waiting for a better leader. It will be saved by neighbors who show up for each other, by communities that refuse to abandon their most vulnerable members, by ordinary people who decide that compassion is not a weakness but the only real source of strength. This is what resilience actually means. It means building networks of mutual aid before the crisis comes, so that when it does, we know who we can depend on. It means learning to share resources, to protect each other, to see that there is no such thing as “those people” when the world is burning. The climate refugees at the border are our future selves. The mother fighting for her child’s healthcare is our family. The trans teenager asking to be seen is our responsibility. If we want to defeat the fascists, we have to stop playing their game of isolation and fear. We have to look each other in the eye, tell the truth, and hold on tight. It will not be easy. It might get much harder before it gets better. But giving up is not an option. The people who want to destroy the world are counting on us to get tired, to get cynical, to turn on each other. The greatest act of rebellion is to keep going, to keep caring, to keep building something better out of the wreckage. We have each other. That is all we have ever really had, and it is more than enough. So let’s do this. Let’s be there for one another, fight like hell, and make sure the world we build out of this chaos is one we can all live in.
