Ukraine’s DisinfoChronicle Exposes Over 4,000 Instances of Russian Disinformation in 3 Years

The ongoing information war between Russia and Ukraine has reached unprecedented levels of complexity and intensity, with both sides vying for control of the narrative. In this digital battleground, DisinfoChronicle, a project by the Ukrainian organization Detector Media, has emerged as a critical watchdog, exposing thousands of instances of Russian disinformation since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Led by Halyna Petrenko, Detector Media has meticulously tracked and debunked over 2,600 false reports, nearly 800 manipulated facts, and 755 propaganda narratives between February 2022 and December 2024. This relentless effort shines a light on the Kremlin’s sophisticated disinformation machinery, which aims to manipulate public opinion both domestically and internationally.

DisinfoChronicle’s work goes beyond simply identifying and debunking false narratives. It also plays a vital role in exposing the individuals and networks orchestrating these disinformation campaigns. By "naming and shaming" key actors within the Russian propaganda ecosystem, Detector Media aims to hold them accountable and disrupt their operations. This includes individuals operating within occupied Ukrainian territories, where the Kremlin has systematically established disinformation hubs, as well as those spreading propaganda abroad. This proactive approach is crucial in combating the insidious nature of disinformation, which often thrives in the shadows.

A key finding of Detector Media’s investigations is the Kremlin’s strategic transformation of occupied Ukrainian regions into centers for disinformation dissemination. Since 2014 in Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk, and since 2022 in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, Russia has established a robust propaganda infrastructure. This network leverages local media outlets, social media platforms, and even educational institutions to spread pro-Kremlin narratives and suppress dissenting voices. The investigation also highlighted the significant role played by the propaganda networks of individuals like Alexander Malkevich and the late Yevgeny Prigozhin, the former head of the Wagner mercenary group. Their involvement underscores the intricate web of actors contributing to the Kremlin’s disinformation efforts.

The global impact of Russian disinformation necessitates international collaboration to counter its spread. Recognizing this, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) launched the Propaganda Monitor in September 2024. This online portal serves as a central resource for analyzing the complex mechanisms and individuals behind Russian propaganda. Crucially, the Propaganda Monitor amplifies the work of expert individuals and organizations like Detector Media, providing a platform for their findings to reach a wider audience. This collaborative approach allows for a more coordinated and effective response to the global challenge of disinformation.

The stark contrast between Ukraine and Russia’s rankings in RSF’s 2024 World Press Freedom Index further highlights the information war’s asymmetry. Ukraine ranks 61st, while Russia sits at 162nd, reflecting the Kremlin’s systematic suppression of independent media and its tight control over information flows. This repressive environment allows disinformation to flourish within Russia while simultaneously hindering the ability of independent journalists to report accurately on the conflict and hold the government accountable. The disparity in press freedom underscores the importance of organizations like Detector Media and initiatives like DisinfoChronicle and the Propaganda Monitor in providing accurate information and countering the Kremlin’s narrative.

The work of DisinfoChronicle and RSF’s Propaganda Monitor exemplifies the crucial role of independent media and civil society organizations in combating disinformation. In the face of a sophisticated and well-funded propaganda machine, these organizations provide a vital counter-narrative, exposing falsehoods, holding perpetrators accountable, and empowering citizens with the information they need to navigate the complex information landscape. Their ongoing efforts are critical not only for Ukraine but also for the global fight against disinformation and the preservation of a free and open press.
