Propagation of Disinformation: A Critical Overview
Join Tom Weber, Jesper Kallestrup, and Annelotte Janse as they address the evolving landscape of disinformation, a phenomenon that shapes perceptions, minds, and societies globally. The event is now open to those eager to explore the patterns, origins, and responses to disinformation, as well as the tactics employed to counter it. For those unable to attend, we host a waiting list to ensure a spot remains available.

The event delves into the historical and present-day struggles over disinformation, examining its emergence, propagation, and eventual resolution. Disinformation has long served as a tool for manipulation, creating pseudo-newscoverage and reinforcing erroneous narratives that形状人们的行为、信念,以及他们 institutions的运作。Through discussions with the speakers, we will uncover the underlying motivations behind these attempts at spreading harmful information, the mechanisms by which disinformation lingers, and the resilience needed to combat it.

Dr. Annelotte Janse, a post-doctoral researcher at Utrecht University, will share insights into the confirmation chasing and dialogues that sustain disbelief in a world increasingly teetering on disinformation. Prof. Jesper Kallestrup, a distinguished philosopher at the University of Aberdeen, will discuss the social epistemic dynamics at play, including echo chambers andổi thinking, which fuel the accumulation of disinformation. Meanwhile, Prof. Thomas Weber, a renowned historian and security theorist, will address the practical strategies for combating disinformation, drawing from his decades of research on authoritarian extremism, neo-colonialism, and disinformation’s broader historical context.

This event is a collaborative effort to advance understanding of disinformation’s impact on human behavior and critical thinking. Dr. Janse, Kallestrup, and Weber will unpack the consequences of disinformation’s arrival, including its persistence and its role in redefining political and religious institutions. By examining these mechanisms, the event aims to inspire more informed and critical engagement with the world and its complexities.

The discussions are hosted at the Aberdeen Art Gallery, offering a unique venue for contemplation on disinformation’s enduring relevance. For those interested, contact [email protected] to join the waiting list. We look forward to this thought-provoking conversation, where insights into disinformation will be shared, questions will be asked, and ideas will be electrodeized as we navigate the challenges of a world increasingly consumed by lies and misinformation.
