Russia Accused of Spreading Disinformation Regarding Polish and Romanian Control of Ukrainian Border

Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) has accused Russia of disseminating false information alleging that Poland and Romania are exercising control over sections of the Ukrainian border. These claims, purportedly supported by a video of a captured Ukrainian border guard, have been dismissed by Ukrainian authorities as fabricated propaganda designed to justify Russia’s military aggression and legitimize its occupation of Ukrainian territories.

According to the CCD, Russian propagandists are propagating the narrative that Ukrainian borders with Poland and Romania are "actually controlled by foreign border guards," and that in certain areas, Polish and Romanian personnel have "moved up to 2 km deep into Ukrainian territory." The CCD refutes these assertions, categorizing them as disinformation tactics commonly employed by the Russian Federation to manipulate public perception and further its geopolitical objectives.

The purported evidence presented by Russian sources, a video featuring a captured Ukrainian border guard, has been denounced by the CCD. The Center points to the well-documented instances of torture and coercion experienced by Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russian captivity, rendering any statements extracted under such duress unreliable and inadmissible as evidence. The CCD emphasizes that Russia has a history of using "confession" videos from captured individuals to spread disinformation and create a false narrative.

The CCD argues that these fabricated allegations serve two primary purposes for Russia. Firstly, they provide a pretext for the ongoing military aggression against Ukraine by creating a false impression of foreign intervention and destabilization. Secondly, these claims bolster the Kremlin’s attempts to portray its occupation of Ukrainian territories as a legitimate response to a perceived external threat, thereby attempting to garner support for its actions both domestically and internationally.

The Ukrainian government continues to call on international partners and media organizations to be vigilant against Russian disinformation campaigns. They emphasize the importance of critical evaluation of information emanating from Russian sources and reliance on verified, credible reporting to counter the spread of false narratives. The CCD’s exposure of these latest disinformation efforts highlights the ongoing information warfare being waged alongside the military conflict, underscoring the need for continued scrutiny and factual reporting.

The international community remains steadfast in its support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemning Russia’s aggression and ongoing disinformation campaigns. The CCD’s efforts to debunk false narratives play a crucial role in maintaining transparency and ensuring that the true picture of the situation on the ground is accurately represented. As the conflict continues, the battle against disinformation remains a vital component of Ukraine’s defense and its pursuit of a just and peaceful resolution.
