‘Al-Ummah’ to fight disinformation, foster Muslim policy dialogue

Last week in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Al-Ummah Foundation took a significant step toward reshaping how the global Muslim community engages with the complex challenges of the 21st century. The organization officially launched “Al-Ummah,” a multilingual journal and digital platform designed to be more than just a media outlet; it is intended to function as an intellectual bridge. By publishing content in Bengali, English, Arabic, and Turkish, the platform aims to dismantle geographic and linguistic barriers, creating a unified space where academics, policymakers, journalists, and young scholars can collaborate on geopolitical, economic, and technological issues that affect the Muslim world today.

The urgency for this initiative stems from a growing concern over the digital era’s double-edged sword. Bangladesh’s Information and Broadcasting Minister, Zahir Uddin Swapan, served as the event’s chief guest and highlighted how, while the internet has democratized information, it has simultaneously become a breeding ground for misinformation and social fragmentation. He argued that the current digital landscape is rife with confusion, making the need for credible, morality-based intellectual discourse more pressing than ever. By prioritizing evidence-based dialogue, Al-Ummah seeks to serve as an antidote to the polarization that often thrives in unregulated online spaces.

The importance of bridging the gap between ivory-tower academia and the reality of governance was a recurring theme among the keynote speakers. Yasin Aktay, a prominent Turkish academic and former adviser to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, pointed out that a primary malaise in contemporary Muslim society is the disconnect between tradition and practical policymaking. Aktay envisions Al-Ummah as the mechanism through which that gap is closed, transforming intellectual heritage into actionable policy. His perspective suggests that the goal is not merely to talk, but to cultivate a “conscious and intellectually enriched” society that can navigate the future with a firm grasp on both tradition and modern reality.

The leadership behind the foundation is acutely aware that the issues facing the world today—such as the rapid integration of artificial intelligence and shifting economic paradigms—are far too complex to be solved by passion alone. Former religious affairs adviser A F M Khalid Hossain emphasized that the path forward requires “knowledge-based leadership.” Echoing this sentiment, the foundation’s chairman and editor-in-chief, Mohammed Zakir Hossain, struck a humble yet determined chord. He noted that the platform does not aim to reinvent the world overnight, but rather to foster long-term, sustainable progress. By leading with research rather than rigid ideology, the foundation hopes to replace reflexive, emotional debates with rigorous, informed discourse.

The launch event was more than a ceremony; it acted as a global convening of minds. Academics and policy experts from an array of nations gathered to map out the future of the platform, with discussions spanning the intricacies of Islamic finance, the ethics of generative AI, and the necessity of education reform. This collaboration signals a shift in strategy for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, moving away from fragmented initiatives and toward a cohesive, technology-driven approach to knowledge production. The consensus was clear: sustainable development and peace in these regions will rely heavily on the ability to produce, verify, and disseminate reliable information.

Looking ahead, Al-Ummah aims to evolve into an international hub for high-level policy analysis. With a structured commitment to publishing research papers, opinion pieces, and detailed special reports, the platform is laying the groundwork for a future where discourse on the Muslim world is defined by data and intellectual depth rather than external perceptions and superficial narratives. By planning to expand its language offerings even further, the foundation is clearly positioning itself to be a permanent, stabilizing force in global communication—an endeavor that promises to bring more clarity, cooperation, and evidence-based wisdom to the forefront of international affairs.
