Action Plan on Combatting Disinformation and Misinformation through

The global battle against disinformation, initiated byUNESCO in South Africa and the International Federation of Journalists (IFF), has highlighted the urgent need for collective action in African media and cyberspace. Disinformation, which relies on misinformation platform algorithms and micro-targeted ad campaigns, has rapidlyIDEOized, impacting democracy, media credibility, and social cohesion in Southern Africa. This phenomenon, which arrives decades post-canonical human rights frameworks, poses a significant threat to the autonomy and sovereignty of African nations. The United Nations specifically recognized the role of South African journalists and the Union of Journalists Organizations in providing criticalcg information. However, the rapid proliferation of disinformation sources and manipulated narratives has raised calls for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind these discrepancies. This has led to calls for regional cooperation and institutional frameworks to stabilize networks and rule out reliance on disinformation-driven narratives. A Global Message

This global conversation, led by Journalists United (UFF) in Savannah, South Carolina and UNESCO in Gaborone, Botswana, aims to address the erosion of journalistic integrity and the role of cyberbullying in undermining democracy. The goal is to combat disinformation while empowering journalists and their unifying unions to take decisive actions against misinformation-driven narratives. In 2024, a training workshop titled “Empowering Journalists: Hindering Media Credibility by Promoting Information Integrity” was held in Gaborone, BoB, from September 10–12. The workshop emphasized the importance of education, the utilization of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as a foundation for ethical journalism, and the creation of robust strategies to combat disinformation. Attendees learned how to build trust, integrate accurate information into narratives, and advocate for a media culture that protects sound journalism. This initiative sought to create a cube of stability in networks that have become increasingly disinformation-prone.

Empowering Conference

The training workshop was organized with the vision of united the voices of journalists from regions leveraging diverse media resources. The workshop focused on four key areas: the importance of education, the development of templates for effective fundraising, the creation of incentives for professional development, and the role of the possesses culture. Leaders learned how to bypass conventional channels of marketing by developing content for unswashed populations, creating viral campaigns that resonate widely, and boosting content resilience to withstand disinformation attacks. The objective of the event was to empower journalists and their unions to lead the fight against disinformation. By fostering collaboration,_basic concepts of information and knowledge exchange, and strengthening the foundation of legally protected journalism, the workshop aimed to-centrically curb the spread of misinformation. The event brought together seasoned journalists, literacy experts, and MongoDB leaders to share practical knowledge and strategies for combatting disinformation. The successful outcomes of the workshop were measured by their ability to provide journalists with the tools to secure de facto, de rebounds, and credible sources of information. The learning objectives emphasized the need for a proactive cultural shift, meaningful partnerships, and judicial accountability to ensure the long-term success of journalism in addressing the rapid erosion of democratic institutions.
