2027: Group warns against AI-driven disinformation, insecurity

The Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), led by retired Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, has issued a sobering wake-up call regarding the future of Nigeria’s national stability. As the nation begins to cast its gaze toward the 2027 general elections, the CCC’s Second Quarter 2026 report paints a picture of a country under siege not just by physical threats, but by a digital contagion. The core of their warning is that the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence—specifically its ability to manufacture hyper-realistic disinformation and manipulated multimedia—is creating a volatile environment that threatens to erode public trust in our institutions. This is no longer merely a technological nuisance; it has become a frontline tactical challenge for national security.

The reality on the ground remains deeply troubling, as the CCC report observes a resurgence in extremist insurgency, banditry, and the seemingly endless cycle of farmer-herder conflicts. What makes this current era of instability particularly dangerous is how these criminal networks are evolving. They are no longer operating in the shadows of the forest alone; they are now leveraging AI-generated fabrications and targeted hate speech to complicate active security operations. By spreading chaos and confusion through digital channels, these groups are effectively weaponizing information to distract the public and demoralize the security forces, making the job of protecting Nigerian citizens exponentially more difficult.

Maj.-Gen. Olukolade was particularly pointed in his assessment of the political climate, warning that the stakes will only rise as we approach the 2027 polls. There is an urgent need for our political leaders to move away from the destructive habit of exploiting ethnic and religious fault lines for partisan gain. When political actors prioritize winning at all costs by stoking domestic animosity, they inadvertently provide oxygen to the very extremists the military is fighting to contain. The CCC has called for a higher standard of leadership, one that recognizes that national cohesion is not merely a political slogan, but a vital component of long-term security.

Beyond the digital and militant threats, the report highlights the compounding weight of socio-economic strain—specifically the persistent challenges of inflation and food insecurity. These economic hardships create a breeding ground for social vulnerability, making citizens easier targets for manipulation by bad actors who exploit desperation. Adding to these concerns, the CCC expressed worry regarding the shrinking space for free expression and the recent misuse of laws aimed at curbing media practitioners. A healthy democracy in the midst of a security crisis demands a transparent and free press, not one stifled by intimidation or over-reaching regulations.

In proposing a way forward, the CCC has thrown its weight behind the push for state police, advocating for prompt constitutional and institutional reforms. However, they emphasize that such a transition must be coupled with strict safeguards to prevent the abuse of power. The organization also urged the Federal Government to sharpen its operational readiness, particularly regarding the scourge of kidnappings that continues to plague many regions. While the military and security agencies deserve credit for their recent successes in disrupting terrorist operations, the report makes it clear that the nature of these threats requires much more than traditional force; it requires smarter, intelligence-driven collaboration.

Ultimately, the burden of securing Nigeria does not rest solely on the shoulders of the armed forces or policymakers. The CCC’s message is one of shared responsibility, calling upon traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society to take an active role in countering the tsunami of misinformation. In an age where a lie can travel across the world in seconds, the average citizen is now part of the national defense infrastructure. By committing to responsible social media habits and verifying information before sharing it, Nigerians can build a layer of “cognitive resilience” that our adversaries will be unable to penetrate. Professionalism, integrity, and active, informed citizenship are the only effective shields against the instability threatening our collective future.
