Woman Defrauded of €800,000 by AI Impersonating Brad Pitt

AI-Generated ‘Brad Pitt’ Swindles French Woman Out of €830,000 in Elaborate Romance Scam

In a chilling testament to the evolving sophistication of online scams, a 53-year-old French interior designer fell victim to an elaborate ruse orchestrated by fraudsters employing artificial intelligence. The perpetrators crafted a convincing digital imitation of Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, ensnaring the woman in a fabricated romance that ultimately cost her her life savings – a staggering €830,000 (approximately £700,000). The scam, currently under police investigation, highlights the growing threat of AI-powered deception and the vulnerability of individuals seeking connection online.

The elaborate scheme began with a seemingly innocuous message from an account purporting to be Jane Etta Pitt, the actor’s mother. The message claimed that the French woman was precisely the kind of person Brad Pitt needed in his life, paving the way for the AI-generated "Brad Pitt" to make contact the following day. Over the ensuing 18 months, the fabricated persona showered the victim with romantic poems, passionate declarations of love, and even a marriage proposal, skillfully weaving a web of deceit designed to extract her finances.

The initial requests for money were relatively small, disguised as customs fees for luxurious handbags supposedly sent by the "actor." As the fabricated relationship deepened, the scammer escalated the demands, claiming that "Brad Pitt" had been diagnosed with kidney cancer and desperately needed funds for treatment. To further manipulate the victim, the fraudsters invented a narrative in which Angelina Jolie, Pitt’s real-life ex-wife, had frozen his assets, leaving him unable to access his fortune. Despite harboring some doubts, the woman was repeatedly reassured by emails purportedly from Pitt’s "doctor," detailing the severity of his condition and his fight for survival. Overwhelmed by the emotional manipulation and the perceived urgency of the situation, she transferred approximately €800,000 to a Turkish bank account.

The victim, who was undergoing a divorce from a wealthy entrepreneur at the time, admitted to being swept away by the romantic overtures of the AI-generated persona. She confessed to French media, "There are few men who write to you like that. I loved the man I was talking to. He knew how to talk to women and it was very well put together." The combination of emotional vulnerability and the skillfully crafted illusion of a relationship with a beloved celebrity blinded her to the red flags that might have alerted her to the scam.

The woman’s daughter attempted to intervene, warning her mother that she was being conned. However, the victim, convinced of the authenticity of the relationship, dismissed her daughter’s concerns, believing that a face-to-face meeting with "Brad Pitt" would vindicate her. It wasn’t until the summer of 2024, when the real Brad Pitt was publicly seen with his current partner, Inès de Ramon, that the victim finally confronted the devastating reality of the deception. The realization triggered a severe depressive episode that required hospitalization.

The victim bravely shared her story with French broadcaster TF1, shedding light on the sophisticated methods employed by online scammers. Sadly, the interview was later removed due to the relentless cyberbullying she endured after going public. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in the digital landscape and the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online relationships. The increasing use of AI to create convincing fake personas poses a significant challenge to individuals and law enforcement alike, demanding greater vigilance and awareness in the face of these evolving threats. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved online security measures and public education campaigns to protect vulnerable individuals from falling prey to such sophisticated scams. The trauma experienced by the victim highlights the devastating emotional and financial consequences of these crimes, which extend beyond monetary loss to inflict deep psychological wounds.
