Woman Defrauded of £700,000 in Elaborate AI-Generated “Brad Pitt” Impersonation Scam

A French Woman’s Costly Delusion: The Brad Pitt Scam That Left Her Ruined

Anne, a 53-year-old French interior designer, fell prey to an elaborate online romance scam orchestrated by individuals impersonating Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. The ordeal began in February 2023 when she received an Instagram message purportedly from Pitt’s mother, initiating a connection that would unravel her life. The following day, a supposed Brad Pitt contacted her directly, referencing the prior conversation and sparking a year-long virtual affair. The scammers employed sophisticated tactics, including daily texts, romantic poems, and AI-generated photos and videos designed to create a convincing illusion of a genuine relationship with the star. Anne, reportedly struggling in her marriage at the time, was quickly captivated by the attention and romantic gestures, finding solace in the carefully crafted messages.

The charade escalated as the scammers began soliciting money from Anne, initially requesting small sums for “customs fees” on purported luxury gifts. As Anne’s emotional investment deepened, so too did the financial demands. The scammers fabricated a medical emergency, claiming that “Brad Pitt” required urgent funds for kidney cancer treatment. Fake doctors even contacted Anne, bolstering the illusion with fabricated medical reports and pleas for financial assistance. Exploiting Anne’s compassion and her perceived connection with the actor, the scammers further claimed that Pitt couldn’t access his own funds due to his ongoing divorce from Angelina Jolie. This orchestrated series of lies convinced Anne that she was saving a man’s life, prompting her to transfer increasingly large sums of money.

Blinded by the carefully constructed fantasy, Anne dismissed warnings from her daughter who suspected the relationship was a scam. She clung to the belief that the illusion would solidify upon meeting "Brad Pitt" in person. The truth finally shattered in the summer of 2024 when Anne saw photographs of the real Brad Pitt with his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, exposing the cruel deception. Even then, the scammers attempted to maintain control, sending fabricated news reports claiming Pitt was secretly dating a “special person." To add insult to injury, another impersonator, posing as an FBI agent, offered to “rescue” Anne from the scam for an additional fee.

The devastating consequences of the scam left Anne penniless and homeless. She sold her furniture, moved in with a friend, and initiated a crowdfunding campaign to cover mounting legal fees. The emotional toll proved unbearable, leading to three suicide attempts and hospitalization in a clinic specializing in severe depression. Anne has since filed a complaint, and an investigation into the scam is currently underway. Her case highlights the devastating impact of online romance scams, preying on vulnerability and exploiting the allure of celebrity connections.

This incident is not isolated; scammers have previously used Brad Pitt’s identity to defraud individuals. Last year, five people in Spain were arrested for swindling two women out of €325,000 using similar tactics involving fake romantic relationships with the actor. These recurring instances underscore the need for increased awareness and caution regarding online interactions, particularly those involving individuals posing as celebrities. In response to such scams, Brad Pitt’s representatives have issued public warnings emphasizing the importance of vigilance and skepticism towards unsolicited online contact. They reiterate that Pitt has no personal social media accounts and advise caution when engaging online with individuals claiming to be high-profile figures.

The case of Anne serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of online romance scams. These elaborate schemes prey on vulnerable individuals, manipulating their emotions and exploiting their desire for connection. The use of sophisticated technologies, like AI-generated images and videos, further blurs the lines between reality and fabrication, making these scams increasingly difficult to detect. As online interactions continue to proliferate, vigilance and awareness are crucial in protecting oneself from the emotional and financial devastation these scams can inflict. The increasing sophistication of these scams necessitates a collective effort to educate and empower individuals to recognize and avoid such manipulative tactics.
