Swiss Ambassador Highlights Need for Fact-Checking Amidst AI Proliferation | Ratopati

In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the distinction between professional journalism and independent content creation is becoming increasingly blurred, prompting a deep reflection on how information shapes our society. Recently, at the 41st installment of the ‘MediaTalk Series’ hosted by the Journalism Department of St. Xavier’s College in Kathmandu, experts gathered to address this tension. The central theme, “Journalists vs. Content Creators: Complementary or Competitors in Shaping Public Discourse?”, served as a timely probe into the challenges posed by modern technology. As information floods our screens at an unrelenting pace, the event sought to clarify the roles of those who hold the pen—or the camera—in an age where the truth is often obscured by the noise of the digital feed.

Swiss Ambassador to Nepal, H.E. Dr. Daniela Weiler, provided a sobering look at these complexities, specifically highlighting the dual-edged sword of Artificial Intelligence. While AI serves as a powerful tool for progress, she warned that it acts as a catalyst for both verified facts and dangerous misinformation. Addressing a room full of aspiring journalists and students, the Ambassador’s message was a clarion call for vigilance: in an environment where content spreads instantly, fact-checking has moved from being a professional requirement to a civic necessity. She emphasized that because everyone—from seasoned reporters to casual social media users—is now a contributor to public discourse, the responsibility for maintaining the integrity of that discourse rests on everyone’s shoulders.

The discussion quickly shifted toward the habits of the younger generation, with veteran journalist Umesh Chauhan offering a practical, “boots-on-the-ground” perspective. As Group Editor at Himalaya TV and OnlineKhabar.com, he expressed concern over the rising trend of short-form, often superficial content consumption. He argued that while viral videos and quick snippets have their place, they cannot replace the rigorous, detailed reporting required to hold power to account. Chauhan’s advice to the students was blunt yet encouraging: step out of the classroom, enter the newsroom, and experience the grit of professional journalism. He believes that only by understanding the ethical foundation of news gathering can the next generation protect the democratic ideals that journalism is meant to uphold.

Adding a modern, nuanced layer to the debate, cultural critic and content creator Suraj Subedi challenged the traditional hierarchy of media. He argued that the rise of independent content creators isn’t necessarily a threat to professional journalism, but rather an expansion of it. According to Subedi, creators possess the unique ability to act as contemporary “watchdogs,” provided they commit to a rigorous process of self-review. He stressed the importance of acknowledging one’s own biases, noting that if creators approach their work with the same level of responsibility and commitment to balance as journalists, they can become a massive force for positive change rather than mere purveyors of drama.

The academic leadership at St. Xavier’s College remained at the heart of this intellectual exploration, with Principal Father Dr. Augustin Thomas praising the event for its depth and relevance. He noted that the success of the MediaTalk series lies in its ability to force students to confront the uncomfortable, evolving realities of their future careers. By placing journalists and creators in the same conversation, the college is training its students to think not just about how to “make” content, but about the impact of the messages they propagate. This pedagogical approach reflects a commitment to nurturing graduates who are not only technically proficient but ethically grounded in the face of rapid technological shifts.

Ultimately, as Faculty Coordinator Chun Bahadur Gurung concluded, the goal isn’t to determine a winner between journalists and content creators, but to find a path toward synergy. As the dust settles on the AI revolution, the fundamental question remains how these two groups can responsibly complement one another to strengthen democracy. Journalism, when anchored in its core principles of honesty and accountability, will always be a foundational pillar of society. When paired with the speed and creativity of independent content creation, informed by the critical thinking emphasized by Ambassador Weiler, there is a clear roadmap for a healthy digital future: one where the audience is not just a consumer, but an informed participant in a vibrant, democratic community.
