iProov Study: 0.1% Can Detect AI-Generated Deepfakes

Deepfakes: The Rise and ResHOOK of AI-Generated Content

The digital age is brimming with a pervasive threat: the use of deepfakes, generated by AI, to impersonate individuals, steal personal information, and facilitate fraudulent activities. A recent study by iProov, a provider of science-based solutions for biometric identity verification, uncovers that most people can’t identify deepfakes effectively—AI-generated videos and images often designed to impersonate people.

The Vulnerability of Humans and Today’s World

The study tested 2,000 UK and US consumers, exposing them to a series of real and deepfake content. The results were alarming: only 0.1 percent of participants could accurately distinguish real from fake content across all stimuli, including images and videos. This level of vulnerability underscores the pervasive nature of deepfakes in today’s digital landscape.

Older generations are particularly vulnerable to these deepfake campaigns. According to the study, 30% of 55-64 year olds and 39% of those aged 65+ had never even heard of deepfakes. This highlight a significant gap in knowledge, which has only increased with age, making them more susceptible to being targeted by these emerging threats.

The Challenge of Visual versus Imaginary Depth

Interestingly, the study found that video challenges were significantly more difficult for individuals to identify than images. Research participants were 36% less likely to correctly identify a synthetic video compared to a synthetic image. While this vulnerability exists, video-based fraud remains a serious concern, particularly in scenarios where video verification is used for identity verification.

Overcome by their poor performance, individuals remain overly confident in their deepfake detection skills. Even among young adults (18-34), this confidence is verified, with 69% claiming over 60% to be overconfident. This false susceptibility to deepfakes is particularly pronounced among older generations, with 82% of those aged 55+ expressing deep anxiety about the spread of misinformation.

Trust and Cybersecurity: The Paradox

Trusting online information and media has seen a decline. Meta and TikTok are increasingly the primary platforms where deepfakes are found online. This heightened trust in social media has led to reduced security concerns, as only one in five people now report a suspected deepfake to social media platforms.

A Solution: Anew Approaches

To combat the rise of deepfakes, security measures must be modernized. While iProov’s 2024 Threat Intelligence Report highlights an 704% increase in face swaps against an already advanced threat, it emphasizes the need for organizations to adopt more robust biometric solutions. By integrating advanced biometric technology with liveness detection, these systems can reliably authenticate individuals without vulnerability to deepfakes.

To bridge this digital鸿沟, a new assessment tool, the iProov online quiz, comes to the forefront. This quiz challenges participants to discern the authenticity of real and fake content, providing a practical solution to a deeply complex challenge.
