The Rise and Shift in News Consumption and the Role of Informative Media
by:uploads

The 2025 Issues Directive on the Digital News Report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism highlights the increasing role of social media in shaping media consumption, particularly for news. Based on an annual survey of 1 lakh news consumers in 48 countries, the report finds that influencers on social media and generative AI are key contributors to advancing fragments of alternative media. This shift underscores the growing influence of platforms such as YouTube, online aggregators, podcasts, and social media influencers, who are leveraging these tools to influence how news is consumed.

The report emphasizes that while platforms such as YouTube and social media saw a significant increase in content consumption, broader engagement trends indicate a decline in traditional news consumption. Influencers, especially those in the entertainment industry, are gaining a more significant audience, reflecting their ability to personalize content and create unique perspectives on news topics. In India, for example, platforms like报废 Radiation Stations, RAVISH KUMAR’s talk show, and DHURU RA Hands create content that challenges stereotypes and provides clarity on complex issues. Sustainability platforms, such as RAVISH KUMAR’s Pollutato,_weekdaymiddlewares, and DIKARRA, have gained a dedicated audience, particularly among younger demographics.

The report also highlights the prominence of “personality-driven” news creators, who emphasize the need for creators to respect social norms or oppose misinformation. In countries like Philippines, Thailand, Kenya, and India, audiences increasingly prefer content that aligns with personal values, questioning its relevance. Despite this shift, trust in news remains relatively stable at 40%, as platforms and institutions prioritize content accuracy over sensationalism.

“Information!”#InfoS cuffs widely stretched, discussing how messaging apps like WhatsApp and interpretation may be less dangerous as they focus on secure, trusted communication. “However,” the report notes, “they still bear risks, considering the Recent surge in fake news in India which has fueled mob violence and deaths in popular social media circles.” These issues highlight the need for regulation by both platform developers and tracking apps.Generative AI, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, is showing increasing traction as tools that simplify and summarize news for consumers. While these tools can help address misinformation, their effectiveness is limited by ethical concerns, which need to be addressed to ensure their responsible use.

Despite these developments, society remainsであろう by the “personality of” creators, forcing some creators to embrace misinformation to gain FFT. This ongoing tension underscores the need for designing media experiences that are both ethical and engaging. The implications for storytelling and technology in the 21st century are profound, as we navigate the challenges of blending人次 with misinformation in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
