For two decades, Google Earth has functioned as the ultimate arbiter of truth. When we wanted to know what a distant conflict zone truly looked like or verify the geography of a news report, we turned to those satellite images as an objective, unvarnished record of reality. However, this long-standing trust is currently facing a profound existential crisis. The recent integration of AI-generation tools into mapping software has opened a dangerous new frontier in disinformation. When manipulated images are no longer the domain of skilled graphic artists but are instead easily generated by anyone with a keyboard, the foundational role that satellite imagery plays in global accountability and journalism begins to erode.
The risks associated with this shift were vividly illustrated earlier this year when an Iranian state-run media outlet circulated a “before-and-after” satellite image. The post claimed an Iranian drone strike had decimated radar equipment at a base in Qatar. In reality, it was a digitally doctored version of a Google Earth image of a completely different base in Bahrain. Because it mimicked the aesthetic of the high-fidelity imagery we have trusted for years, the lie traveled across the globe before investigators could debunk it. The danger here is that by co-opting the visual language of an authoritative source, AI makes falsehoods feel like undeniable evidence, turning the map itself into a weapon of war.
The backlash from the open-source intelligence (OSINT) community was swift and severe. Experts like Tom Jarvis from the Centre for Information Resilience have pointed out that integrating AI generation directly into mapping interfaces essentially turns the tools of truth-telling against the truth-tellers. If an investigator relies on these platforms to document war crimes or environmental destruction, they are now playing in an ecosystem where the perpetrators can just as easily generate “counter-evidence” to cloud the narrative. By lowering the barrier to entry for creating realistic fakes, tech companies have inadvertently provided bad actors with a blueprint to undermine the very investigative work that keeps global power structures accountable.
This creates a psychological dilemma because, for most of us, “seeing is believing.” As Benjamin Ang of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies notes, society has been conditioned for decades to view satellite imagery as inherently more honest than ground-level photography. We perceive a “God’s-eye view” as detached, scientific, and impartial. That psychological bias is exactly what bad actors are now exploiting. In the past, creating a convincing satellite forgery required significant resources and technical mastery. Today, a teenager with a generative prompt can create a scene that looks just authentic enough to incite panic, influence markets, or spark diplomatic outrage.
In response to these concerns, Google has pointed to their “SynthID” digital watermarking technology, arguing that users can simply check images against verification tools if they are suspicious. While this sounds good in a corporate press release, it ignores the reality of how human communication actually functions. Information doesn’t live in high-security verification portals; it lives in the messy, high-speed ecosystem of WhatsApp, Telegram, and WeChat group chats. The average person, overwhelmed by the volume of content they encounter daily, is simply not going to pause their scrolling to run a verification check on a viral map image. Once a fake image infiltrates a private family chat, the context is lost, and the damage is already done.
Ultimately, we are entering an era where our reliance on digital “truth” must be replaced by a healthier, more active skepticism. If the maps we use to understand the world can be rewritten by algorithms at a moment’s notice, the burden of verification shifts from the platform provider to the individual. The danger isn’t just that people will be fooled; it is that the public will eventually stop believing in satellite evidence altogether. If everything can be fake, then the truth becomes just another perspective. To protect the integrity of our information landscape, we must demand more than just digital watermarks—we need a cultural shift that prioritizes source verification over the convenience of a viral image.
