Even Musk’s Grok identifies Elon as a leading source of misinformation on X’s AI platform

In a remarkable turn of events, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) model, Grok, has identified him as one of the leading purveyors of misinformation on X, the social media platform he acquired two years ago. This assertion arose when a user named Gary Koepnick prompted the chatbot about who spreads the most misinformation on X. Grok’s response cited Musk’s significant online presence and the nature of his posts related to political and COVID-19-related topics. It elaborated that Musk’s engagement—especially when sharing or commenting on misinformation—seems to confer legitimacy to false narratives, which can have dire consequences during critical events such as elections. The bot indicated that, particularly since Musk’s takeover, there have been notable changes in content moderation and an increase in misinformation penetration.

Grok acknowledged that defining “misinformation” can be subjective and indicated that the misinformation ecosystem on X is multifaceted and extends beyond the actions of individual users. The AI system provided “substantial evidence” to support its claim, stating that Musk has disseminated manipulated videos and false assertions about what it dubbed “voting processes.” In its analysis, Grok referenced various news organizations, including CBS News and Mother Jones, among others, to affirm its stance on Musk’s influence in spreading inaccuracies that could potentially affect billions of people worldwide through his platform.

Despite the pointed revelations from Grok, Musk did not respond to requests for comment from The Independent. Acknowledging the limitations often encountered with AI systems, it’s important to note that Grok, like many AI chatbots, has displayed inconsistencies in its outputs, with previous instances of producing erroneous narratives. Nonetheless, Musk has touted Grok’s capabilities, especially in analyzing images and explaining memes. Recently, he boasted about the AI’s performance, encouraging users to leverage Grok for information grounded in current data.

In a podcast appearance shortly before the elections, Musk discussed issues surrounding misinformation on X, asserting that the antidote to misinformation is better information. He noted the introduction of Community Notes on the platform, which allows users to fact-check each other’s posts—a feature Musk encouraged for counteracting inaccuracies. However, challenges remain; a report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate highlighted that Musk’s erroneous claims regarding FEMA funding for hurricane survivors and US elections garnered substantial engagement, totaling billions of views, without accompanying fact-checks.

Musk’s fraught relationship with traditional media further complicates his narrative. He has publicly disparaged “legacy” media outlets that he accuses of perpetuating hoaxes, instead advocating for the validity of information propagated by X users and the general public. This staunch stance raises concerns about the accountability mechanisms in place on X, especially in light of Grok’s findings about Musk’s contributions to misinformation.

As X continues its public beta program for Grok—a version having been rolled out in August—the implications of these findings bear significant weight in the ongoing discourse around social media responsibility and the complexities of content moderation. Should the influential voices on platforms like X fail to critically engage with the content they disseminate, the risk of misinformation leading to real-world consequences only grows. This predicament underscores the pressing need for informed engagement and the imperative role of accountability in curtailing the spread of falsehoods in digital spaces.
