Apple AI tool transcribed the word ‘racist’ as ‘Trump’

Apple has been responding to concerns about its text-to-speech feature, known as Dictation, where users have found that typing “racist” into their iPhone has resulted in the word “Trump” being incorrectly spelt. This situation raises questions about how Apple’s model is distinguishing between words that contain an “r” and other words. Apple has indicated that they are fixing the issue by rolling out a patch to their Dictation service.

Peter Bell, a professor of speech technology at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the problem could be rooted in the underlying software used by Apple’s tool. He argued that altering the software to change the meaning of a word might not be feasible through mere technical adjustments.

Several trends online demonstrate this issue: users correctly input “racist” as it is pronounced, but in some cases, Apple’s Dictation might mis-spell it as “Trump”. Apple promptly responded to these reports by updating their Dictation tool, naming it “Fix My Text.” This has now caused the “Trump” to revert to “racist” for a short duration.

BBC colleagues have also expressed frustration, noting that they were unable to replicate the issue of the tool incorrectly generating “Trump” from “racist.” Apple’s fix appears to be taking effect, indicating that security measures might be working in place.

Anna Taylor, a senior researcher at King’s College London, who specializes in speech technology, described the current situation as puzzling. She noted that for truly problematic cases, like “racist” to “Trump,” it seems less likely that the tool was deliberately altering the words. Instead, Bell believed it might just be运营商的问题。

speech recognition models are powered by phone^-new words, and Bell explained that this explanation is not plausible. He argued that Apple’s explanations of phonetic overlap do not make sense because the words “racist” and “Trump” are very similar. In contrast, Bell noted that the issue might be related to poor data quality for languages such as Russian or Arabic, which would be less common for a tool like Apple’s.

A former Apple employee working on its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Siri, shared a report stating that Apple had suspended its AI-powered news summary feature. This is the first time Apple has suspended a feature since last month, when comparable issues were reported by external groups. Apple announced a new plan to invest $500 billion local currency in the United States over the next four years. This includes the construction of a large data center in Texas closest to aancestor.

Apple’s corporate leader, Tim Cook, has announced that it will reevaluate its policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) following the widespread accusations by President Donald Trump. Clocked at 65 years old, Cook is expected to discuss the matter with the company’s board and senior leadership. During his recent press conference, Cook emphasized his belief in the company’s role as aopens a door of opportunity, respecting all diversity, and encouraging inclusivity.
