The Fading Glow of Trust: How AI Is Redefining Deception in Online Commerce

We’ve all seen them: those heartwarming videos that pop up on our feeds, pulling at our heartstrings with tales of artisanal craftsmanship and generations of dedication. A granddaughter, her voice thick with emotion, describes her grandfather’s lifetime commitment to hand-stitching leather bags in his quaint workshop. The camera lovingly lingers on weathered hands, the rich texture of leather, the almost palpable sense of history infused into each piece. She announces, with a touch of wistful pride, that his life’s work is finally available online, but only for a limited time. It’s a narrative designed to evoke trust, to make us believe in the authenticity of what we’re seeing, and to compel us to reach for our wallets. The problem, as a recent investigation unveiled, is that this entire beautiful story, and countless others like it, is a complete fabrication, a meticulously constructed mirage woven by the invisible threads of generative artificial intelligence.

This isn’t an isolated incident; rather, it’s the tip of a rapidly expanding iceberg. My colleagues and I at ABC News have uncovered dozens of similar operations across platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Each one employs sophisticated generative AI to conjure up convincing founders, realistic-looking factory footage, and compelling brand narratives. Their ultimate goal is simple yet insidious: to sell low-quality, often imported, goods at premium prices by cleverly masquerading as legitimate, often small and struggling, businesses. This technological leap has fundamentally altered the landscape of consumer trust online. It wasn’t that long ago that a direct-to-consumer brand needed to demonstrate genuine credibility. You needed a real person behind the brand, authentic photography that showcased the product honestly, and tangible operational integrity to justify asking $80 for a designer candle or $200 for a handcrafted bag. Now, with the power of AI, companies can construct entire fictional identities, generating fake images and videos of artisans who don’t exist, crafting products that are assembled in mere hours, creating an illusion of heritage and quality that is entirely hollow.

The modus operandi of these “Trust Factories” follows a remarkably consistent formula, a well-rehearsed play designed to exploit human emotions and vulnerabilities. Some operations leverage AI for emotional appeals, painting a picture of hardship and resilience. For instance, one seemingly New York-based clothing retailer conjured an AI-generated image of a storefront, its windows shattered and police tape fluttering grimly, announcing a “huge sale” designed to help them rebuild after an unfortunate incident. Others meticulously simulate artisanship, creating narratives of painstaking handcraft and time-honored traditions. What makes these deceptions so potent isn’t necessarily the high production quality of the AI-generated content – sometimes, upon closer inspection, the cracks begin to show. Instead, their success hinges on impeccable timing. By the time consumers begin to leave negative reviews or file complaints, by the time the truth starts to unravel, these fraudulent websites have often vanished into the digital ether, or swiftly pivoted to selling an entirely different line of goods. The short, fleeting window between their launch and their eventual exposure is their profit margin, a high-stakes gamble often paid for by unwitting consumers.

The architecture of social media platforms, ironically designed to connect us, inadvertently amplifies this risk. These fraudulent entities thrive in the fast-paced, often distracting environment of social feeds, where users are more prone to impulse purchases, driven by the seductive scroll-and-tap dynamic of social commerce. This rapid-fire consumption often bypasses the critical scrutiny a buyer might apply on a dedicated e-commerce site. The numbers are frankly alarming. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that Americans lost a staggering $2.1 billion to scams originating on social media in 2025 alone, an eightfold increase compared to just five years prior in 2020. This figure is likely a significant underestimation, as the FTC acknowledges that a vast majority of scams go unreported, burying the true financial and emotional toll beneath the surface.

This deluge of AI-generated fraud places a unique burden on the very platforms where these scams flourish, pushing them into a familiar, yet increasingly complex, predicament. They are constantly grappling with the paradox of needing to move at lightning speed to remain competitive, while simultaneously building robust detection systems capable of identifying identities that simply don’t exist. The numbers from Allure Security offer a glimpse into the sheer scale of the battle: TikTok, in the first half of 2025 alone, rejected over 1.4 million seller applications, proactively blocked 70 million products before they could even be listed, and outright removed approximately 700,000 sellers for policy violations. Even with these monumental efforts, the company’s head of global governance candidly describes generative AI as a powerful tool wielded by organized fraud networks operating on an unprecedented global scale, hinting at the uphill battle that platforms face.

While these figures demonstrate that platforms are indeed in motion, trying to stem the tide, the pace isn’t always fast enough to keep up with the evolving ingenuity of fraudsters. A separate study by PYMNTS Intelligence reveals a mixed bag of responses from businesses themselves. While a significant 52% have deployed new AI models specifically for fraud detection – with retailers, in particular, using adaptive machine learning to reduce false positives by an impressive 85% while doubling their detection of compromised cards – the adoption of generative AI for fraud protection is lagging. Only 37% of businesses currently utilize this technology, even as a staggering 72% anticipate AI-driven fraud to be their single biggest challenge by 2026. This creates a critical “verification gap.” Detecting fraudulent content at the surface level is one challenge; the more profound and difficult problem lies in the merchant onboarding process. Visa reports that cybercriminals are now effortlessly using generative AI to create synthetic identities, deepfake videos, and meticulously forged digital documents that easily bypass traditional verification methods. A fabricated founder, imbued with a plausible backstory and supported by a registered domain and polished, AI-generated product videos, can now effortlessly clear onboarding checks designed for an entirely different threat model. For payment platforms, the question has transcended merely identifying a fraudulent transaction; it has become a fundamental inquiry into the very realness of the merchant behind it. AI-generated synthetic identities, a sophisticated blend of real and fabricated information, allow fraudsters to sidestep verification systems that were simply not built to contend with such advanced deception. The FTC’s reported 3 million fraud reports in 2025, culminating in total losses of $15.9 billion – a substantial increase from $12.5 billion the previous year – with impersonation scams leading the charge, paints a stark picture of the new reality. As the agency prepares to release updated guidance on AI-generated deception later this year, it’s clear that the fight against these sophisticated digital illusions has only just begun, demanding constant vigilance and increasingly sophisticated countermeasures to restore the fading glow of trust in our online marketplaces.
