A wave of “AI slop”—the proliferation of artificial intelligence-generated and heavily manipulated imagery—is threatening to compromise the very databases that scientists use to track biodiversity and understand the shifting patterns of our planet’s wildlife.
The tension lies in the intersection of artistic aspiration and scientific integrity. As generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini become more accessible, the barrier to creating “perfect” wildlife photography has vanished. While many photographers simply want to remove an obstructive branch or brighten a dull background to make their shot more aesthetically pleasing, these seemingly minor edits can have catastrophic consequences. AI algorithms don’t just “clean” photos; they often hallucinate details, pulling textures and anatomical features from entirely different species to fill in gaps. When these images are uploaded to databases like iNaturalist or the Macaulay Library, they transform from personal keepsakes into false data points that pollute our collective understanding of where birds actually live.

While the most egregious hoaxes—such as a tropical toucan appearing in the Siberian snow—are easy for experts to laugh off, the subtle, “enhanced” images are far more dangerous because they look plausible. Because these databases rely on the sheer scale of public participation, scientists cannot manually verify every single upload.
