The Looming Threat of AI-Generated Misinformation in Indian Elections
Generative artificial intelligence (genAI), with its ability to create realistic yet fabricated text, images, audio, and video, presents a growing global concern. This tapped into the ruling party’s emphasis on infrastructure development as a marker of economic progress. Another theme promoted Hindu supremacy, featuring AI-generated videos of Hindu saints making inflammatory statements against Muslims, and images glorifying Hindu deities and figures with exaggerated physiques. Furthermore, fabricated scenes from the ongoing war in Gaza were found, drawing parallels to alleged Muslim violence against Hindus in India, exploiting current events to target minority groups.
While the study indicates that genAI has not yet significantly swayed elections, it highlights the technology’s potential for amplifying disinformation campaigns. The emotionally resonant, hyper-idealized imagery produced by genAI can be particularly persuasive, especially to those with pre-existing biases. The blurring of lines between animation and reality further enhances the credibility of such content, potentially increasing its impact.
