AI’s Growing Presence in Everyday Life Met with Uncertainty and Distrust in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is rapidly infiltrating various aspects of our lives, from internet searches to social media interactions. A recent KFF Health Misinformation Tracking Poll reveals that two-thirds of American adults have encountered or utilized AI, with a third engaging with it multiple times a week. This integration, while widespread, has been met with significant apprehension, particularly regarding its application in healthcare. Despite the growing familiarity with AI, a notable skepticism persists, highlighting the challenges of navigating the evolving landscape of information dissemination.

One of the primary concerns revolves around the ability to discern truth from falsehood in AI-generated content. A majority of adults, 56%, lack confidence in their ability to differentiate between accurate and inaccurate information presented by AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft CoPilot, or Google Gemini. This uncertainty transcends usage, with even half of regular AI users expressing similar doubts. This widespread distrust underscores the need for improved methods of verifying AI-generated information and educating the public on critical evaluation strategies. The study reveals a clear disconnect between the pervasiveness of AI and the public’s trust in its output.

The healthcare domain presents a particularly sensitive area of concern. While approximately one in six adults, and a quarter of those under 30, utilize AI chatbots monthly for health advice, a pervasive mistrust of the accuracy of such information prevails. A majority of adults, including most AI users, express a lack of confidence in the accuracy of health information provided by these tools. This skepticism is understandable given the potential consequences of misinformation in healthcare, where inaccurate advice can have serious repercussions. The study clearly indicates that the public is not yet ready to embrace AI as a reliable source of health information.

This distrust in AI-generated health information stems from a broader skepticism regarding the reliability of such information. While a degree of trust exists regarding AI’s ability to provide information on practical tasks and technology, significantly fewer adults trust chatbots for health or political information. This trend continues even among AI users, highlighting a pervasive awareness of the limitations of these technologies, particularly in sensitive areas. The public appears to recognize that AI’s strengths lie in less consequential domains, while human expertise remains crucial for complex and sensitive areas like health and politics.

The long-term impact of AI on accessing accurate health information remains uncertain. A significant portion of the public remains unsure whether AI will ultimately be more beneficial or detrimental to online health information seekers. While some see AI as a potential tool for improved access to information, others fear its potential to exacerbate the spread of misinformation. This uncertainty extends to AI users themselves, with a near-even split between those who view AI as helpful, harmful, or are uncertain about its impact. This division underscores the need for further research and development to ensure AI’s responsible application in healthcare.
