India Launches Global ‘TruthTell’ Hackathon to Combat Misinformation in Live Broadcasts

NEW DELHI – In a groundbreaking move to combat the rising tide of misinformation in live broadcasts, the Indian Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in partnership with the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), has launched the TruthTell Hackathon. This global competition aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop real-time solutions for detecting and verifying information disseminated during live broadcasts. The initiative forms a crucial component of the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 and falls under the ambit of Season 1 of the Create in India Challenge (CIC), a national program promoting innovation and technological development. The hackathon seeks to foster a more transparent and trustworthy media ecosystem by encouraging the ethical application of AI in news reporting.

The TruthTell Hackathon has attracted significant global attention, drawing over 5,600 registrations from developers, data scientists, and media professionals worldwide. Notably, the competition boasts a strong female representation, with 36% of participants being women, reflecting a diverse and inclusive approach to tackling the global challenge of misinformation. Participants will compete for a prize pool of Rs 10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD), with winning teams receiving not only cash prizes but also invaluable mentorship from leading technology experts and incubation support to further develop their innovative solutions.

The hackathon is designed to address the increasing prevalence of misinformation, which poses a significant threat to credible journalism and informed public discourse. The rapid dissemination of false or misleading information through live broadcasts can have far-reaching consequences, including jeopardizing public safety, inciting social unrest, and eroding trust in established media institutions. By leveraging the potential of AI, the TruthTell Hackathon aims to empower media organizations with the tools to identify and counter misinformation in real time, thus enhancing the accuracy and reliability of information reaching the public.

The competition focuses on developing AI-driven tools capable of analyzing live broadcast content, including audio, video, and text, to identify potential instances of misinformation. These tools will be designed to cross-reference information with verified sources, flag suspicious claims, and provide real-time alerts to broadcasters and fact-checkers. The emphasis on real-time detection is crucial in mitigating the rapid spread of misinformation, particularly in the context of live events where information is consumed instantaneously. The TruthTell Hackathon will unfold in several phases. The deadline for prototype submission is February 21st, 2025, providing participants ample time to develop and refine their AI solutions. Final presentations will take place at the end of March 2025, where shortlisted teams will showcase their innovations to a panel of judges comprising experts in AI, media, and technology. The winning teams will be announced and celebrated at the WAVES Summit 2025, providing them with a platform to demonstrate their solutions to a wider audience and connect with potential investors and collaborators.

The initiative enjoys the backing of prominent organizations, including the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), the IndiaAI Mission, and DataLEADS. This collaborative approach underscores ICEA’s commitment to fostering innovation within the media technology sector and raising broadcasting standards.
