Newburgh Mounts Campaign to Combat ICE Misinformation and Empower Immigrant Community

Newburgh, NY – City officials are stepping up efforts to counter a wave of misinformation regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity, which has sparked fear and disrupted local businesses. Numerous false rumors of ICE raids have proliferated online, leading to a significant drop in customers at businesses catering to the city’s large immigrant population. While officials vehemently deny any recent ICE operations, they are proactively educating residents about their constitutional rights and preparing them for the possibility of future enforcement actions.

The misinformation campaign has had a tangible impact on the local economy. Business owners report a stark decline in patronage, with some attributing the downturn directly to online posts falsely claiming ICE presence near City Hall and south of Broadway. Azuzena Garcia, owner of Hermanas Garcia on Washington Street, observed a noticeable absence of customers and expressed concern about the widespread fear fueled by unsubstantiated claims circulating on social media. She has taken the initiative to educate her customers about their Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights, providing them with cards outlining their right to remain silent and refuse searches without a warrant. However, the pervasive anxiety continues to deter many from venturing out.

City and county officials are working diligently to debunk the false reports. They confirmed that a recent photo purporting to show ICE agents actually depicted members of the U.S. Marshals Service. Earlier this month, similar false claims about ICE operations at local schools were also refuted, with officials clarifying that the activity was related to New York State Police executing warrants. The constant barrage of misinformation has created a climate of uncertainty and fear, impacting not only businesses but also employees who are hesitant to commute to work.

Immigrant rights advocates and elected officials are receiving a flood of calls from concerned business owners and residents. They are emphasizing the importance of knowing one’s rights, regardless of immigration status. Orange County Legislator Genesis Ramos highlighted the deceptive tactics sometimes employed by ICE and stressed the critical need for community members to be informed and prepared. City Council Member Ramona Monteverde announced plans for city leaders to meet with business owners this weekend to dispel the rumors and provide guidance on how to respond to potential ICE encounters.

The proactive approach by Newburgh officials reflects a commitment to protecting the rights of its diverse population while acknowledging the potential for future ICE activity. The city’s strategy involves a two-pronged approach: combating misinformation and empowering residents with knowledge of their constitutional rights. This multifaceted effort aims to mitigate the negative impact of fear and rumors while fostering a sense of preparedness and resilience within the community.

Prior to the current administration, ICE’s stated priority was the removal of undocumented immigrants with a history of violence. Current officials have stated a focus on targeting “criminals” and apprehending “the worst, first.” While the specific criteria and enforcement practices may evolve, Newburgh officials are determined to ensure that its residents are informed and equipped to navigate any potential interactions with ICE, emphasizing the importance of knowing and exercising their constitutional rights.
