Chinese Nationals Detained in Indonesia for False Accusations of Extortion at Soekarno-Hatta Airport
Two Chinese nationals, identified as LB and LJ, find themselves in detention in Indonesia following allegations of extortion against immigration officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which they later retracted. The incident began on January 17, 2025, when the pair posted a video on their TikTok account, @stellaroptics888, claiming they were victims of extortion by airport immigration officials. The video rapidly gained traction on the platform, prompting a swift response from Indonesian authorities.
The Directorate General of Immigration, led by Acting Director General Saffar Muhammad Godam, launched an immediate internal investigation into the claims. This investigation involved a thorough review of CCTV footage from the airport, meticulously tracking LB and LJ’s movements from their arrival to their departure from the immigration inspection zone. The review aimed to corroborate the allegations and determine the veracity of the claims made in the viral TikTok video.
The investigation revealed a different narrative. According to the CCTV footage, LB and LJ had initially entered the airport through a passage designated for priority passengers, an area not intended for their use. Immigration officers, following standard protocol, redirected them to the correct processing area for international arrivals. This interaction, captured in its entirety by the airport’s surveillance system, formed the basis of the immigration authority’s counter-narrative.
Crucially, the CCTV footage did not provide any evidence supporting the extortion claims made by the Chinese nationals. Godam explicitly stated that the review revealed no instance of officers admitting to receiving any money from LB and LJ. This lack of corroborating evidence cast significant doubt on the initial allegations, shifting the focus towards the actions of the accusers.
Following the internal investigation, on January 20, 2025, a new video appeared on the @stellaroptics888 TikTok account. In this subsequent video, the account owner issued an apology and retracted the earlier allegations of extortion. This public retraction, while admitting to the falsehood of the initial claims, did not absolve LB and LJ from the consequences of their actions. The Directorate General of Immigration continued to pursue the matter, seeking to understand the motivations behind the false accusations and to apply appropriate sanctions.
Despite the retraction, the Immigration authorities proceeded with a direct interview with LB and LJ to clarify the conflicting statements presented in their two videos. During this interview, the two individuals maintained their stance as outlined in the second video, reiterating their apology and retraction. However, the Directorate General of Immigration affirmed that LB and LJ would still face sanctions for their actions, as their initial accusations had triggered an official investigation and caused reputational damage. The two individuals were detained pending repatriation to China, where they will likely face further scrutiny for their conduct abroad.
