This narrative emerged in the wake of China’s announcement of an antitrust investigation into the US chip giant, sparking speculation about the company’s future in the world’s second-largest economy. However, the image in question predates the investigation by a year, originating from Huang’s first official visit to Vietnam in December 2023.
The social media posts, which appeared on platforms such as Douyin, Weibo, and X (formerly Twitter), painted a picture of a despondent Huang, clad in a simple black T-shirt and devoid of his trademark leather jacket, sitting at a street food stall. The posts insinuated that Huang’s appearance reflected his despair over losing the Chinese market due to the ongoing investigation. These posts capitalized on the escalating tensions between the US and China in the technology sector, framing Huang’s supposed downfall as a consequence of the geopolitical crossfire.
The reality, however, was starkly different. The photo was taken during Huang’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in December 2023, a year before the Chinese investigation was announced. This fact was easily verifiable through a reverse image search, which led to the original photo posted by Vietnam’s consul general in San Francisco, Hoang Anh Tuan, on his official Facebook page. The accompanying post detailed Huang’s preference for experiencing local Vietnamese cuisine over formal dinners, highlighting a cultural exchange rather than a business setback. Further confirmation came from Vietnamese media outlet VnExpress, which reported on Huang’s visit and his interest in establishing a semiconductor base in Vietnam.
The timing of the misleading posts coincided with the announcement of China’s State Administration for Market Regulation’s probe into Nvidia for alleged violations of antitrust laws. The investigation stemmed from concerns about Nvidia’s acquisition of Israeli data center firm Mellanox Technologies Ltd in 2020, and whether the company had adhered to its commitments made during that acquisition. The investigation itself underscored the broader friction between the US and China over technological dominance, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, where Nvidia holds a leading position in providing essential AI chips.
Nvidia, meanwhile, has refuted the narrative of despair and market loss presented in the social media posts.
