Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Impregnating Minor on False Promise of Marriage
SILCHAR, INDIA – A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for impregnating a 17-year-old girl under the false pretense of marriage. The verdict was delivered on Friday by a special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Cachar, Assam. The court also levied a fine of Rs 10,000, with an additional six months imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid. The convict, a resident of Chandighat in Cachar, engaged in a romantic relationship with the minor in 2022, leading to repeated sexual encounters predicated on a promise of marriage.
The girl’s pregnancy came to light in October 2022 when her parents sought medical attention for her sudden illness. The doctor’s confirmation of her pregnancy shattered the family and revealed the clandestine affair. Upon questioning, the girl disclosed her relationship with the young man. Her parents immediately contacted the youth’s family and village elders, seeking accountability. However, during a village meeting, the accused vehemently denied any involvement with the girl.
Left with no recourse, the girl’s parents filed a formal complaint with the Udharband police station. The ensuing investigation corroborated the girl’s account, culminating in the arrest and subsequent trial of the accused. Tragically, the girl gave birth to a baby girl a few months later, who sadly passed away after just five days. This devastating loss further compounded the trauma experienced by the young victim and her family.
The special POCSO court, presided over by Judge Narayan Kuri, meticulously examined the evidence and testimonies presented during the trial. The court found the accused guilty of aggravated penetrative sexual assault under Section 6 of the POCSO Act. This stringent law, designed to protect children from sexual abuse, carries a minimum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, which can extend to life imprisonment. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of the crime and underscores the commitment to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
This case highlights the vulnerability of minors, particularly girls, to exploitation through false promises of marriage. The exploitation often leaves lasting emotional and psychological scars on the victims.
