The 2024 election cycle, both in the United States and internationally, was anticipated to be a proving ground for the disruptive potential of artificial intelligence. Fears abounded that sophisticated AI tools, capable of generating realistic deepfakes – fabricated audio and video content – would flood the digital landscape, blurring the lines between truth and falsehood and potentially swaying public opinion. However, recent studies and post-election analyses paint a surprisingly different picture: the anticipated deluge of AI-generated disinformation failed to materialize, and its impact on electoral outcomes appears to have been minimal.

While the specter of AI-driven manipulation loomed large, the reality on the ground was far less dramatic. Research conducted by organizations like the Alan Turing Institute’s Centre for Technology and Security (CETaS) found a relatively small number of AI-generated disinformation campaigns related to major elections in the UK, France, the European Union, and the United States. The limited prevalence, reach, and sophistication of observed AI-fabricated content point to a less impactful role than initially feared. However, the high level of public concern and the potential for misuse of the technology necessitate continued vigilance and further research.
