Combating Election Misinformation: A Call for Algorithmic Reliability Standards

The integrity of democratic elections worldwide is facing a growing threat from the proliferation of fake news and misinformation, amplified by the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Deepfakes, AI-generated synthetic media that can convincingly fabricate events and statements, represent a particularly potent weapon in this information war. These technologies can manipulate public opinion, erode trust in democratic institutions, and destabilize societies. This research project, funded by Brunel University London’s Policy Development Fund, seeks to address this critical challenge by exploring the implementation of reliable algorithmic standards to combat the spread of misinformation and safeguard the integrity of elections. As recent elections in 77 countries, including the UK, demonstrate, bolstering public trust in democratic processes is paramount.

This project delves into the complex interplay between responsible AI use and the urgent need to mitigate the harms of misinformation, particularly in the context of elections. The research team is investigating how governments and online platforms can adopt and enforce algorithmic reliability standards and regulations to counter election misinformation. This includes tackling issues such as voter manipulation through targeted disinformation campaigns and the misuse of AI technologies to spread fake news. The project aims to strike a balance, harnessing the potential of AI while simultaneously safeguarding against its malicious applications.
